  1. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) A Primer JPO Regional Workshop Nairobi, 28 May 2002

  2. MDGs: Origins • the Millennium Declaration • the global conferences and summits of the 1990s • the “International Development Targets (IDTs)”

  3. Mapping the MDGs • 8 goals • few in number • stable over time • easy to communicate • balance between South & North • 18 targets, 40+ indicators

  4. MDGs: Why they matter • credibility: promises, promises • can globalisation be inclusive? • a final test for dev. cooperation? • the future of multilateralism

  5. MDGs: The Challenge • social indicators show progress in the 1990s but too slowly to reach agreed targets….and are slowing down • broken promises on primary education, mortality reduction, child malnutrition, income poverty

  6. MDGs: The Opportunity • common ground • progress on $$ in Monterrey • the push in J’Burg • the demonstrated potential of civil society • the effects of 9/11 • a consensus on development

  7. MDGs: UNDP’s role in one word, strategic and historic in a few more words, • “scorekeeper” • “campaign manager” • “coordinator”

  8. The UN’s role: global and country • analysis • monitoring • campaigning • direct assistance

  9. MDGs and partnerships: why? in 2 words: results (“development effectiveness”) ownership (not just about getting “buy-in” or funds)

  10. MDGs and partnerships: with whom? • within the UN - UNDP is not just another UN agency • with governments • with civil society • with the private sector • with the media • with academia • with many others

  11. MDGs and partnerships: a pipe dream? • UN: a common focus, common strategy, common tools, in 2 years common procedures • Governments: strong in the OECD, still at an early stage in the developing world • Civil society: contacts increasing steadily • Private sector: much more willing to do its bit

  12. MDGs: some questions 1. Do you think that the MDGs are “business as usual”? Why? Why not? 2. What are some of the key challenges that you would face in pushing for the MDGs in your country?
