  1. Nonverbal Communication Oral Interp exercises Movement & Body Unit

  2. #1 – Wordless Acting • Students should “letter” off A… B… A… B… • Student B will draw an emotional distraction (do not reveal it) • You will each be given a script – Student A will read their lines, while Student B will communicate their lines in a nonverbal way • After the dialogue scene, the audience will be asked to guess the emotional distraction afflicting Student B, based on their facial expressions, gestures & body movements

  3. #2 – We Have to Move Now! • Each student will draw a mood or disposition (ex. guilty, happy, suspicious…) • Students will read the sentence on the notecard that will be passed around. • Be sure to focus on the WAY you read the sentence that will help you express the mood you have drawn • The audience should be able to determine your mood by the way you say the line

  4. #3 – Stack the Deck • You will each be given a playing card • Keep your card a secret! No one can see the type or color of another’s card. • You MUST NOT TALK during this exercise. • Your goal is to arrange yourselves into 4 groups according to suit (hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds) using ONLY nonverbal communication. • Once you are all in your suit groups, you must line up in order of rank, from ACE to KING. • The group who lines up in proper order first wins!

  5. #4 – Silent Movie • You will be divided into 4 groups • You will serve as both SCREENWRITERand ACTOR. • Spend the remainder of the period with your group today as SCREENWRITERS. You may finish next period, as well as work with your ACTORS to get ready to show your movie. • You may use instrumental music if desired. • You will be writing a Silent Movie Scene, with the following requirements in mind:

  6. #4 – Silent Movie • Silent movies tell a story without words. It is important to start the scene with a person doing an obvious task, like cleaning the house or rowing a boat. • This scene is interrupted when a second actor (or several actors) enters the scene. The appearance of the new actor/s has a big impact. Remember that the new characters could be animals, burglars, children, salesmen, etc. • A physical commotion takes place. • The problem is resolved.

  7. #4 – Silent Movie • You will choose another group to be your ACTORS • Briefly go over the story line and script with them • Your ACTORS may rehearse with you for 10 minutes • After 10 minutes, switch roles. SCREENWRITERS will become ACTORS for another group, and have 10 minutes to rehearse. • We will enjoy the 4 movie performances the final 30 minutes of the period! • ACTORS must keep to a 7-10 min. time limit
