  4. WHO’S TAKING ASL AT SRJC • Matt • Full-time student • Will use ASL credits for foreign language requirement at a four-year college

  5. WHO’S TAKING ASL AT SRJC • Angelica • Mother of a Deaf three-year-old girl • Wants to be able to communicate easily with her Deaf child

  6. WHO’S TAKING ASL AT SRJC • Ricardo • Son of Deaf parents • Plans to transfer to a four-year college and train to become an ASL interpreter

  7. WHO’S TAKING ASL AT SRJC • Kathleen • Hard-of-hearing SRJC student • Wants to expand her options for communication and success in college

  9. THE ASL DEPARTMENT NOW • 60 sections of ASL classes every year • Four Levels of ASL skill development • Classes in Deaf culture • Special social and cultural events to expose students to the Deaf World • ASL proficiency evaluations

  10. THE ASL DEPT OF THE FUTURE • Goal: Upgrade and expand curriculum and create a major in ASL/Deaf Studies • Goal: Establish new certificate program for ASL Interpreters

  11. THE ASL DEPT OF THE FUTURE • Goal: Increase the number of full-time faculty from one instructor to three • Goal: Establish a new ASL language lab to provide students with high-tech and personal resources for learning ASL

  14. AN ASL MINI-LESSON • What if YOU met a Deaf person at SRJC? • “Hello.” • “I’m a member of the board.” • “Nice to meet you.”

  15. STAFF • One full-time ASL instructor and twelve adjunct instructors • All instructors are highly fluent in ASL • Eleven instructors are Deaf. Students are challenged to use ASL for all classroom communication.
