  3. SOME CRITICAL QUESTIONS • Why does our school exist? • Why should students come to our school rather than another? • What learning do we value? • What learning do we want to achieve? • How do we know that our students have achieved?

  5. EDUCATION educo, educare (Lat): to lead out What kind of world? What do they need?

  6. THEREFORE ….. • What world do we want to create in and through our schools? Why? • How do we shape the curriculum intentionally to achieve the learning we value? • How do we create opportunities for learning what we value? • How do we establish whether the learning has happened or not?

  7. TYPES OF SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Social leading discussions persuasion co-operation team work bringing out the best in others Meta-cognitive self-reflection self-evaluation Cognitive problem solving inventing and creating critical thinking formulating questions searching for relevant information making informed judgements analysing and presenting data Affective Perseverance/resilience internal motivation initiative responsibility self-efficacy independence flexibility coping with change learnacy

CRITICAL OUTCOMES • Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made. • Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community. • Organise and manage oneself and one’s activities responsibly and effectively. • Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information. • Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/ or language skills in the modes of oral and/ or written presentation. • Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others. • Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.

SOME SUGGESTIONS MAKE THE TIME TO…. • Agree on what you value as a school community. • Agree on what learning you want to achieve - Grade 7 vs Grade 12 • Critically analyse the national curriculum in the light of this. • Shape your own school curriculum intentionally and explicitly. - within and across subjects - within and across grades to ensure progression - have a clear and defensible rationale • Teach it and assess it Ownership Uniqueness Independence
