  2. Why did Polk favor going to war with Mexico? He believes war with Mexico would: • Bring New Mexico and California into the union.

  3. Favoring the war • The president supported Texas’s claims with Mexico over the Texas Mexico border.

  4. Why was public opinion divided over going to war with Mexico? • Not everyone agreed going to war. • Famous abolitionist James Russell did not agree. • He considered the war a “ national crime committed in behoof of slavery, our common sin.” • Another was John Calhoun: he saw the perils of expansionism.

  5. John Slidell • Late 1845, Polk sends Spanish- speaking John Slidell. • He sent him to purchase California and new Mexico to gain approval of the Rio Grande. • Mexico refuses. • Polk sends Zachery Taylor to blockade the river.

  6. How did the Mexican American war begin? • Taylor sets up forces at Rio Grande. - John C. Fremont breaks a violation of Mexico’s territorial rights. - Mexico responds by sending troops to Rio Grande. - 9 U.S. soldiers killed. - Polk upset and sends war message to congress.

  8. How did views of the war differ among the nation’s region’s? • Northerners saw the war as a plot to expand slavery. - The north did not agree with the war.

  9. Different views • It was seen in the south as a good thing because they could acquire Texas and add to slavery. - The south agreed with the war.
