The War with Mexico. Tyler Lyons & Gabriella Pretty. Polk Wants War. President Polk wanted to expand the Union. Originally wanted Texas   Realized he could gain New Mexico and California Polk sent Zachary Taylor to blockade the Rio Grande Mexicans saw this as a violation of their rights.

  2. Polk Wants War • President Polk wanted to expand the Union. • Originally wanted Texas  •  Realized he could gain New Mexico and California • Polk sent Zachary Taylor to blockade the Rio Grande • Mexicans saw this as a violation of their rights

  3. The People's Opinion • The nation shared his goals of expansion •  Public opinion was split over military actions • Slavery would emerge over this debate • John C. Calhoun • Pro slavery • Saw expanding the union as harmful to the U.S.  

  4. Northern View • North was against the war • They saw it as a plot to expand slavery • It would ensure Union domination for the South

Those Who Sided With the North • Charles Sumner proclaimed: "The lives of Mexicans are sacrificed in this cause; and a domestic question, which should be reserved for bloodless debate in our own country, is transferred to fields of battle in a foreign land." • Abolitionist, James Russell Lowell said..  • "the war is a national crime committed in behoof of slavery, our common sin." 

  6. Southern View • South wanted to expand on slavery  • By adding texas there would be a calling for many more slaves • Texas was below the 36 30 line from the Missouri Compromise

  7. The Rio Grande Dispute Rio Grande Video The US and Mexico began arguing over the boundaries of Texas The Americans wanted the boundary to be the Rio Grande The Mexicans thought that was too much land and wanted the boundary to be pushed more East Tension rose between the US and Mexico

  8. The Beginning of the War • John C. Frémont led an invasion into Mexico's Alta California province  •  Mexico responded by sending troops across the Rio Grande • Polk sent Zachary Taylor to blockade the Rio Grande

While at the Rio Grande • Mexicans saw this as a violation of their rights  • Killed 9 U.S. soldiers  • The United States blame Mexico for starting the war because they shed American blood. • President James K. Polk said: • "Mexico has passed the boundary o fthe United States, has invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil... The two nations are now at war."

The War Rages • The Mexicans fought valiantly but had poor leadership •  Santa Anna attacked Zachary Taylor's soldiers at Buena Vista • The Mexican soldiers were exhausted and ended up being pushed farther back to Mexico •  Winfield Scott captured Vera Cruz in March • On September 14th, 1847 Scott's army captured Mexico City

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • US and Mexico signed a treaty to end war on February 2, 1848 •  Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande as the border of Texas •  Mexico ceded New Mexico and California to the US •  The US agreed to pay 15 million dollars for the Mexican cession • Included present day California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and some of Arizona, Wyoming, and Colorado • The treaty guaranteed Mexicans living in the regions: •  freedom of religion  • protection of property • bilingual elections • open borders
