  1. How to Navigate a Set of Field Notes….

  2. First the Jargon… • Benchmark • Backsight • Foresight • Height of Instrument • Elevation • Turning Point • Station

  3. Benchmark • A Point of known or given Elevation

  4. Backsight • A rod Reading at a Benchmark

  5. Foresight • A rod reading at a point of unknown elevation

  6. Height of Instrument • The vertical distant from the ground to the level or laser. • Calculated by adding the rod reading at a Backsight to the Benchmark elevation Height of Instrument

  7. Elevation • Vertical distance of a point from sea level. • Calculated by subtracting the rod reading at a foresight from the Height of Instrument

  8. Turning Point • Occurs when the Surveyor’s Level is moved, thus requiring a new height of instrument to be calculated

  9. Station • Point where rod readings are taken

  10. Field Notes • Simple table to take accurate notation of rod readings. • Allows for simple calculations of elevation

  11. Field Notes

  12. Field Notes Rod Reading at Benchmark

  13. Field Notes Height off the ground of the instrument

  14. Field Notes Rod Reading at Station 0+75
