  1. Active learning for successful transition to from school to university Dr. Julia Novak and Dr. Tanya Evans Department of Mathematics

  2. Active Learning Edgar Dale. Cone of experience [or learning]. Loosely adapted from Dale, E. (1946, 1954, 1969). Audio-visual methods in teaching. New York, NY: Dryden.

  3. Threshold Topics • Trigonometry and special triangles (unit circle) • Natural logarithms and exponentials • Algebraic manipulation (simplifying fractions) • Geometric interpretation of vectors, lines and planes • Logical arguments (if A then B) • Definitions (especially for functions)

  4. Workshop Write a post-it idea about an active learning technique that could be used with one of these threshold topics. • Trigonometry and special triangles (unit circle) • Natural logarithms and exponentials • Algebraic manipulation (simplifying fractions) • Geometric interpretation of vectors, lines and planes • Logical arguments (if A then B)

  5. Workshop Share your ideas with your team and discuss the pros and cons. • Choose a scribe to make a note of these ideas • Choose a spokesperson

  6. Workshop Share your ideas with your team and discuss the pros and cons. • Choose a scribe to make a note of these ideas • Choose a spokesperson Now we will share these ideas with everyone else
