  1. Use of XML Robert Bunge OCIO Robert.bunge@noaa.gov 301-713-1381 x140 NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  2. NDFD and XML • Use of Extensible Markup Language (XML) to disseminate NDFD data was first considered in 2003; • Seemed to be an ideal way to query for a small slice of NDFD data over the ‘Net; • Low cost of entry with wide adoption of XML across all sectors; • Done in parallel with XML services for Watch/warnings/current Obs NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  3. NDFD and XML • Initial choice of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) based on trends in industry and potential automated integration into some development environments; • Digital Weather Markup Language (DWML) schema developed at NWS by MDL; NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  4. NDFD-XML • Experimental NDFD-XML SOAP service first made available in 2004; • Demonstration pages also provided plain HTTP “GET” interface; • Service extended to provide a 12/24 hour daily summarization that include icon links and “character of the day” information NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  5. NDFD-XML • 2005: use of the service had grown enough to impact HQ web farm server performance; • Redesigns of internal systems; • Availability of NDFD-XML via degrib • 2006: SOAP service running from 30-40 million request per month (about 10/sec); NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  6. NDFD-XML • Where to: • DWML from degrib • Development of application using SOAP/HTTP service • If application grows, partner now has the option of using degrib directly, giving them more control over, speed, number of queries, etc • NDFDwfs – providing NDFD data in GIS formats using Geography Markup Language; NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)

  7. NDFD-XML • RSS – Real Simple Syndication • We’ve had many requests for this • Likely combine words with icons and links to related NWS radar displays, etc • What else? NDFD Technical Workshop (Nov 2, 2006)
