  3. Remedial Reading Program • Pragathi Partnered with the Akshara Foundation to Implement a Remedial Reading program in Kannada • 1,343 Children in 22 Schools Assessed for Reading Competency (Kannada) • 491 Children Identified as Needing Assistance with Reading Skills

Assessments and Baseline • Zero Level ( 0 )- where the child can barely identify 25% of the alphabets • Letter Level ( L )- where the child can identify most of the letters • Word Level ( W ) - where the child can identify words • Sentence Level ( S ) - where the child can read sentences • Paragraph Level ( P ) - where the child can read the entire paragraph Children at Zero, Letter and Word are Included in the Program

  5. Training for Teachers • 42 Teachers and a Cluster Resource Person Trained to Conduct the Assessment and Administer the Accelerated Reading Program

  8. Mid-Term Results: Details 85% have Moved up: 38% to Letter, 35% to Word, 12% to Sentence 15% Remain at the Zero Level 89% have Moved up: 68% to Word, 16% to Sentence, 4% to Paragraph 70% have Moved up: 53% to Sentence, 17% to Paragraph

  9. Next Steps (2009) • Expand the Accelerated Kannada Reading Program to 425 Schools • Strengthen Reading Skills through Library Programs • Introduce Remedial Math Program to 22 Schools

Remedial Teaching • Pratham Launched Remedial Teaching Programs to Address the Problem • Being Implemented in 19 States • Akshara Foundation and the Dept. of Education Implementing this in Parts of Karnataka • Pragathi Partnered with Akshara to Implement the Remedial Reading Program in 22 Schools

Assessments and Baseline All the children were assessed using a standardized baseline test at the start of the program and based on their reading competency they are divided into 5 levels: • Zero Level ( 0 )- where the child can barely identify 25% of the alphabets • Letter Level ( L )- where the child can identify most of the letters • Word Level ( W ) - where the child can identify words • Sentence Level ( S ) - where the child can read sentences • Paragraph Level ( P ) - where the child can read the entire paragraph See http://aksharafoundation.org/reports/KLP_report.pdf for more info Children at Zero, Letter and Word are Included in the Program

  24. Results: Before and After • 85% of the Children at ‘Zero’ Level have Moved up • Upward Movement in ‘Letter’ and ‘Word’ Categories • 43% of the Children now are Able to Read Sentences or Paragraphs!
