  3. Edinburg CISD Local Board Policy • FMH (Local) Commencement Exercises “Students shall meet all state and local graduation requirements, including all applicable exit-level testing, to be eligible to participate in commencement activities and ceremonies.”

Attendance • Compulsory Law • It is the law in Texas than: A student between the ages of 6 and 18 attend school as well as any applicable accelerated instructional program, extended year programs or tutorial sessions unless the student is otherwise legally exempted or excused. • Truancy • Truancy may also result in assessment of penalty by a court of law against the student and his or her parents if the student is absent from school on ten or more days or parts of days within a six month period in the same school year, or is absent on three or more days or parts of days within a four week period

  6. Attendance • Loss of Credit • To receive credit in a class, a student must attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered. A student who attends fewer than 90 percent of the days the class is offered cannot receive credit for the class unless the attendance review committee finds that the absences are the result of extenuating circumstances. • Texas Driver’s License Attendance Requirement • To obtain a driver license, a student between the ages of 16 and 18 must annually provide to the Texas Department of Public Safety a form obtained from the school verifying that the student has met the 90 percent attendance requirement for the semester preceding the date of application. • 18 Year Old Student • If a student 18 or older has more than five unexcused absences in a a semester, the District may revoke the student’s enrollment.

  10. Top things colleges want… 1. A high school curriculum that challenges the student. 2. Grades that represent strong effort and an upward trend. 3. A well-written essay that provides insight into the student’s unique (Remember: They meet the essay before they meet you) personality, values and goals. 4. Passionate involvement in activities that demonstrate leadership and initiative. 5. Solid scores on standardized tests (SAT/ ACT).

  12. Get Noticed:Tips for letters of recommendation 1. Choose a teacher who can highlight your strengths and draw on personal knowledge about you the student. 2. Prepare a request for a recommendation letter. 3. Prepare some personal information including resume and personal statement to give your recommender . 3. Fill out the appropriate student sections before you give to the recommender on Personal Recommendation Form. 4. Please give recommender two weeks notice.

Uniform Admissions Policy • Must successfully complete the Recommended or Distinguished High School Program or complete a curriculum equivalent in content and rigor that was available to student OR • Meet the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks (English=18, Reading=21, Mathematics=22, Science=24) OR • Earn at least a SAT assessment score of 1500 out of 2400 or the equivalent.

Senate Bill 1528 Legislative Bill that allows students who are non-residents to be classified as Texas Residents for College Admissions and Financial Aid (State Funds) purposes only and if the student: • Has resided in Texas three (3) consecutive years leading up to graduation, • Will reside in Texas for 12 consecutive months prior to enrollment, • Will graduate from a Public Texas High School or receive their GED • And provides a notarized statement that the student meets the above criteria and intends to apply for Permanent Residency at the earliest opportunity.

Scholarships • Scholarship Criteria: • Merit Based-grades in school • Need based (based on family income) • Based on Athletic ability • Writing Skills • Test Scores • Most Scholarships require: • Community Service Hours • Active in school, church, or community • ACT/SAT scores • above average G.P.A.

Types of Scholarships State and National Scholarships- 1st Semester Amounts range from $1,000 to $25,000 Local Scholarships-2nd Semester Amounts range from $100 to $2,500 University Scholarships-1st Semester Amounts range from $500 to $250,000 The big scholarships are awarded by the universities!

Noncompetitive/Minimally Difficult/Moderately Difficult Schools  Look at above average ACT scores and rank May also consider essays and letters of recommendation May also consider your ethnic background Very Difficult/Most Difficult Once admitted they look at families income to award you university funds

  37. Important financial aid tips to remember: • File your income tax as soon as possible! You can apply as soon after January 1st. • Early filing will allow you to use the IRS Data Retrieval System (2 week processing time). • Make sure all information provided on the FAFSA is current and accurate; mistakes can cause major delays in processing • Priority Deadline is MARCH 1: all verification documents must be submitted by this date!

  38. After you apply… • Review your Student Aid Report SAR • Submit Verification Worksheets, if requested by university. Follow up ONE week later. • If no Verification Worksheet is required, an award letter will be sent to you. Review this letter and follow up with your university to accept or deny award.
