  2. Nonvascular Plants • The three major groups of nonvascular plants are: • Mosses • Liverworts • Hornworts

  3. Nonvascular Plants • These low growing plants live in moist environments where they can absorb water and nutrients directly from their environment

  4. Mosses • Mosses are the most diverse group of nonvascular plants – There are over 10,000 different species

  5. Mosses • The familiar green fuzzy moss is the gametophyte stage of the plant. • The sporophyte stage grows out of the gametophyte

  6. Mosses • Peat moss is used in agriculture and gardening. • Peat moss grows in bogs, which are so acidic that decomposers do not survive there. When the plants die, they build up at the bottom of the bog. Over time, the plants become compressed and form peat.

  7. Liverworts and Hornworts • Liverworts are much more common than hornworts. • Liverworts can also be found on moist rocks or soil • Hornworts usually live in moist soil, mixed with grass plants
