  2. Leto (Latona) • Born to the Titans Phoebe and Coeus • Nomenclatures include “Bright One” and “Hidden One” • Originated in the Asia Minor (Modern Turkey) along with Apollo and Artemis. • Goddess of motherhood and protector of children

  3. Union with Zeus • Leto was wed to Zeus, even before Hera was • Prophecy stated a child of Leto’s would be more dear to Zeus than Hera’s children Hephaestus and Ares. • Hera extremely jealous

  4. Wrath of Hera • Hera stated that Leto could not give birth where the sun shined. (in other versions on terra firma) • She also proclaimed divine vengeance on any city that would aid her • Therefore, Leto was without a place to rest or assistance.

  5. On Her Trail • Python was prophesized to be killed by a child of Leto. (some say Hera ordered him) • Left Delphi, where he always guarded, to pursue her. • Leto escaped through Zeus’ intervention

  6. Loophole • Leto was carried off to the floating island of Delos. • With the help of Poseidon, waves blocked out the sun while she gave birth • Twins were born, Apollo and Artemis

  7. For Sins Against My Mother • Shortly after his birth, Apollo seeks Python in revenge. (some say the revenge was for an attempted molestation of Leto) • He slays Python and takes the Oracle at Delphi as his own. • Delphi was considered to be the center of the universe by the Greeks

  9. Indirect Power • Has not been credited with powers of her own • Was a fertility goddess in Asia Minor and has power through her offspring • They would do the bidding of their mother.

  10. Proud Mother of Two • Leto was a very proud mother. • The queen of Thebes (Niobe) bragged about her children and insulted Leto at a ceremony to her • Leto sent Apollo and Artemis to slay all of her children. • Moral: Mortals should not compare themselves to gods

  11. What a Looker! • No stress was on her appearance • Being a motherhood goddess, she had no equipment • She is shone mostly protecting her children, instructing them, or simply being in their midst
