  1. Writing Prompt- Recycling • Students in Charleston are cleaning up- cleaning up waste. As a result of their efforts, waste disposal costs have decreased, students have learned how to be conservative, and important natural resources have been saved. Write a persuasive letter to our principal suggesting that we go paperless. You may have suggestions on how this can be accomplished.

  2. Warm-Up • What are Natural Resources? • Name & Define the 2 categories that Natural Resources can belong to.

  5. 7-4.6 • Classify resources as renewable or nonrenewable and explain the implications of their depletion and the importance of conservation. • Vocabulary: • Implications depletion • conservation

  7. Depletion • Use of a resource faster than it is replenished

  8. Conservation • Act of conserving or protecting from loss

  9. Renewable Resources • They are replaced through natural processes at a rate that is equal to or greater than the rate at which they are being used.

  10. Renewable Resources • Renewable Resources: • Air • Water • Soil • Living things • Sunlight

  11. ???? • New Soil? Forms very slowly • Trees/plants? Grow to replace those that have been cut down or died. • Animals? Born to replace animals that have died.

  13. Nonrenewable resources • They exist in a fixed amount. • They can only be replaced by processes that take millions of years. • They are exhaustible. • Used faster than they are formed

  14. Think? • Nonrenewable resources are being extracted and used at a much faster rate than the rate at which they are formed. • Why is this?

  15. Research • Choose oil, coal, natural gas, or diamonds and find out what the production is and where these resources are located.

  16. Explain why natural resources are important. At least 5 sentences. Choose your topic for research and tell me everything you know about this topic. Create 5 questions about your topic. Name on Paper/ turn in to me
