  1. Mier Expedition • In November of 1842 President Sam Houston sent a militia to patrol the Texas-Mexico border • After several weeks of patrolling about 300 members of the militia decided to defy orders and they attacked the Mexican town of Mier • 900 Mexican troops soon came to protect the town and the Texas militia was forced to surrender • While being taken to Mexico City the Texans overpowered their guards and made an escape • However many died, and those that survived were recaptured about a week later

  2. Warm Up – Black Bean • Santa Anna decided to make the 176 soldiers draw beans, and anyone who drew a black bean would be executed • If every 10th person drew a black bean, How many total were executed?
