WHAT IS A CALL! • Definition of call - intransitive verb • 1 a : to speak in a loud distinct voice so as to be heard at a distance : shout call for help • b : to make a request or demand call for an investigation • c of an animal : to utter a characteristic note or cry • d : to get or try to get into communication by telephone just called to say hello —often used with up • e : to make a demand in card games (as for a particular card or for a show of hands) • f : to give the calls for a square dance

  4. Hear the Call! Count the Cost! Now Choose! • HAVE YOU BEEN CALLED BY GOD? TO DO WHAT? • HOW CAN YOU PROVE IN YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCE THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL • We have heard and seen the faithfulness of our God. The cost of following Him is a life dedicated to serving Him. How will you choose?

CALL/ VOCATION • APPLIES TO GOD’S INTENTIONS. • APPLIES TO: CREATION, GOD’S PEOPLE AND INDIVIDUALS. • OT –GOD’S CALL TO FAITHFULNESS TO COVENANT – Accept a new position – prophet. • NT – Discipleship of JESUS CHRIST. • CHRISTIAN TRADITION – CALL TO FAITH, CALL TO MINISTRY, CALL TO A SPICIFIC WAY OF LIFE.

Now Choose! • Disciples of Christ are called to live in the TRUTH! • The disciple of Jesus continues in his word so as to know “the truth [that] will make you free” and that sanctifies. To follow Jesus is to live in “the Spirit of truth,” whom the Father sends in his name and who leads “into all the truth.”

Reading II: 1 Corinthians 6:13-15; 17-20 • St. Paul explained that the Corinthians were called from idol worship to the worship of the one true God. • WHAT WAS THE COST TO RESPOND TO THE CALL? • WHAT WERE THE CORINTHIANS CONCERNED ABOUT? • CAN A CHRISTIAN SATISFY SEXUAL DESIRES WITHOUT SIN?

PAUL’S RESPONSE TRINITARIAN? • DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: What does it cost you to follow Jesus? What choices have you made?

  10. ALL BAPTIZED ARE CALLED TO CHASTITY The various forms of chastity. • All the baptized are called to chastity. The Christian has “put on Christ,” (Gal 3:27) the model for all chastity. • There are three forms of the virtue of chastity: the first is that of spouses, the second that of widows and the third that of virgins. We do not praise any one of them to the exclusion of the others.... This is what makes for the richness of the discipline of the Church.

Gospel John 1: 35-42 • The Gospel gives examples of how Andrew, John and Peter heard the call, counted the cost, and chose to follow Jesus. • 1) The Call- John the Baptist was standing with two disciples. One is identified as Andrew. The other is likely John the Evangelist himself. • John the Baptist identifies Jesus for them as the Lamb of God. They heard him say this and followed Jesus (vv. 35-37).

Gospel John 1: 35-42 • 2) The Cost – When Jesus noticed that they were following Him, He turned and asked them who they were looking for? • He appeared to want Andrew and John to declare their reasons for following Him. • They hinted that they were willing to live with Him. Rabbi, they declared, where are you staying (vv. 38-40)?

Gospel John 1: 35-42 • 3) The Choice - Andrew and John chose to follow Jesus. • They could have chosen to continue to follow John, or to follow no one. • Andrew’s encounter with Jesus was so powerful that he immediately went to find his brother Simon, announced he had found the Messiah, and brought Simon to Jesus (vv. 40-41). • WHY WAS PETER’S NAME CHANGED?
