  1. Failure is NOT an Option Ten Common Routes to Failure, and How to Avoid Each Chapter Three

  2. Have you ever heard this before? Change is messy! Haven’t we done this before? It didn’t work the last time and it won’t work this time. This too shall pass. Administrators come and go, but the teachers last.

  3. Change Creating lasting change in education has been elusive. Teachers are less than enthusiastic about embracing change when the feel it is done “to them” and not “with them.”

  4. Obstacle 1: We Don’t Want to Change Overcome the reluctance to change through: Communication Encouragement Slowing the pace Voicing concerns More Communication

  5. Obstacle 2: You’re the Leader, Tell Me What to Do True change requires that all stakeholders within the school, administrators, teachers, classified staff, parents and students work cooperatively for the benefit of ALL students.

  6. Obstacle 3: We Have No Time for This! The change process must be seen as valuable and worth the time and energy being spent. Time can be an excuse. Ask, “Is time the only issue? If I were to assure you that you would have sufficient time to do this, would you become actively involved in the process?”

  7. Obstacle 4: Carrots and Sticks Don’t Work Fear is not a motivational tool. When participants believe in the vision of the organization and establish a set of core values, they will be intrinsically motivated to achieve.

  8. Obstacle 5: Students Must Be Tested and Graded High stakes accountability can stifle innovation, student engagement and learning. The intrinsic motivation to learn can be replaced by the extrinsic motivator to get a good grade.

  9. Obstacle 6: The Mandates Are in the Way External barriers to change exist. Working with these barriers through factual data and persistence are necessary.

  10. Obstacle 7: We Like Last Year’s Silver Bullet Better EDI, PLC, SLF, IN, DI, etc. etc. etc. Mechanical and structural changes do not create change or improvement.

  11. Obstacle 8: We Don’t Know What We Want, What We Need, or the Difference Between the Two Are you “cruising” on past efforts, success or initiatives? What will it take to truly move this school forward?

  12. Obstacle 9: We Can’t Agree Define Consensus for your group. Consensus: You get your say, but not everyone gets their way. Once consensus is reached, leaders confront behaviors not consistent with the mutual agreements and celebrate success!

  13. Obstacle 10: We’re Waiting for the Dream Team Don’t wait for the next best thing. District wide alignment enhances outcomes for schools. If there is a void in leadership, fill it!
