  2. Failure is NOT an OptionAppeals to the Heart… • The school community must find the courage to increase and sustain levels of student achievement. • Courage comes from the French word coeur, or “heart.” • Effective leaders act with heart.

  3. A Test of Courage You are approaching a mall and discover it is on fire. Would you enter? Would you enter the mall under these circumstances: • A big shoe sale is going on? (None of those surveyed answered “Yes” to this question)

  4. Would you enter the mall under these circumstances: • People are in the mall (who might be trapped)? (About 5% answered “Yes” to this question.) • Children are in the mall (who might be trapped)? (About 25% responded “Yes” to this question.)

  5. Would you enter the mall under these circumstances: • Your children are in the mall? (Every person who was asked Question 4 emphatically answered that they would enter the mall to save their own children.) WHY ?

  6. WHY ? “People are willing to make sacrifices if they see the reason why…People need to know the stakes are worth it? (Heifetz & Linsky, 2002, p. 94)

  7. The Question to Ask Yourself? Are you generating the passion, purpose and energy to lead your administrators, teachers, students and community forward?

  8. Successful School Leaders Leaders who turn failing schools around and keep successful schools moving forward over time exhibit characteristics found in the following five axioms: • Begin with Your Core -This is what you stand for. These are the guiding principles we live our lives by.

  9. Successful School Leaders Axiom #2 • Create Organizational Meaning -Who are we? What do we stand for? What do we come to school to do everyday for the benefit of students? Define your mission.

  10. Successful School Leaders Axiom #3 • Maintain Constancy and Clarity of Purpose -This helps to reduce stress among staff and leads to greater success within the areas of focus.

  11. Successful School Leaders Axiom #4 • Confront the Data and Your Fears -Successful organizations consistently and accurately assess current performance (data) with an eye toward improvement. Good to Great, Jim Collins (2001)

  12. Successful School Leaders Axiom #5 • Build Sustainable Relationships -Relationships are a crucial element of student achievement and school success. True leaders create relationships between individuals and their work. -Kouzes and Posner (1999)
