  1. Busting the Myths About Abortion Pro-Life 101

  2. Myth Abortion (n)- a quick, simple way to end a pregnancy without consequences.

  3. FACT Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, resulting in the death of an unborn human being, often referred to as embryo or fetus.

  4. Myth The unborn is just a blob of tissue in the womb. There is no life present.

  5. FACT From the moment of conception, the unborn is a living human organism.

  6. Unborn is LIVING • No Period of Non-Life • 3 Characteristics of Living Things

  7. Unborn is HUMAN • DNA Signature • Reproduce after own kind.

  8. Unborn is ORGANISM • Confusion of Parts and Wholes • Confusion of Construction and Development • Adequate Nutrition/Proper Environment

  9. 10 Second Pro-Life Apologist • If the Unborn is growing, isn’t it alive? • If it has human parents, isn’t it human? • And living humans, or human beings, like you and me are valuable, aren’t they?

  10. Fertilization and Implantation • Sperm and egg combine to create new human being • 46 unique chromosomes • Full DNA in place that determines every physical characteristic of the person • 7-14 days after fertilization the young embryo implants in the uterine walls of the mother • Begins to receive nourishment from mother Fertilization

  11. 1-3 Months • Cells constantly dividing • 18 days: Heartbeat • 32 days: Brainwaves • Fingernails are formed • Most structures of a fully formed adult are present in the eighth week. • 10,000 times larger than fertilized egg Week 5

  12. 4-6 Months • Vocal Cords present • Reacts to Pain • Sucks Thumb • Develops tastebuds • Moves in Womb • Mother begins to feel baby. Week 15

  13. 7 Months-Birth • Oil and sweat glands functioning • All five senses are active • Recognizes mother’s voice • Happy Birthday!

  14. Myth Abortion is a simple surgery that is no more invasive than having a tooth pulled.

  15. FACT Abortion is a violent and extremely invasive act.

  16. Ru-486 • Taken up until 9th week of pregnancy • RU-486 chemically blocks nutrients from getting to uterine lining, thus starving baby • Mifeprestone, taken a day after the RU-486 pill, causes contractions to release the dead embryo from the mother’s body

  17. Suction Aspiration • Used on 5-12 week old baby • Accounts for 90% of all abortions • A cannula, a powerful vacuum, is inserted through the dilated cervix, sucking the unborn child out • Due to the power of the vacuum, the uterine wall can be torn • Afterwards, a sharp knife is used to scrape the uterine wall for any body parts

  18. Suction Aspiration at 9 weeks

  19. Suction Aspiration at 9 weeks

  20. Suction Aspiration at 9 weeks

  21. Dilation And Curettage(D and C) • Used up to 16 weeks post conception • Second most common abortion procedure • After dilation, a loop-shaped steel blade called a curette cuts the child into pieces • The pieces of the child must be removed from the mother’s womb

  22. D and C at 14 weeks

  23. D and C at 14 weeks

  24. D and C at 14 weeks

  25. D and C at 14 weeks

  26. Dilation And Evacuation(D and E) • Used between 16 and 24 weeks after bones have become calcified • Forceps crush and remove limbs of child • Remaining parts of child are removed from womb

  27. D and E at 23 weeks

  28. D and E at 23 weeks

  29. D and E at 23 weeks

  30. D and E at 23 weeks

  31. Dilation And Extraction(D and X)Partial Birth Abortion • Used from 24 weeks to before birth • Baby delivered feet first, leaving head in birth canal • Scissors puncture skull, allowing brains to be removed • Skull crushed, dead baby removed • Now illegal in U.S.

  32. ONLY 4 differences: SLED There are only four differences between born humans and unborn humans, and these differences should not justify the killing of the unborn. Size Level of Development Environment Degree of Dependency

  33. Myth Abortion is a liberating choice for women.

  34. FACT Abortion causes physical, emotional, and spiritual pain, commonly referred to as Post-Abortion Syndrome.

  35. Post-Abortion Syndrome • Inability to complete grieving process • Anxiety and Depression • Increased risk of suicide • Increased risk of miscarriage and cervical cancer • Difficulty establishing long-term relationships

  36. Myth Abortion is so rare it is not worth talking about.

  37. FACT 3,700 a day in U.S. 1.3 million a year Over 55 million since 1973 in U.S. 7,000-10,000 a year in LA

  38. Myth Abortion is done mainly for the health of the mother or because of rape and incest.

  39. FACT Most Updated Information

  40. Myth Planned Parenthood was founded, and still exists today, to be a champion for women’s health and safety.

  41. FACT The American Birth Control League, which later became Planned Parenthood, was founded in 1921 by Margaret Sanger to educate Americans about the dangers of overpopulation, and promote birth control and sterilization for the “unfit” and “feebleminded”.

  42. Planned Parenthood Facts • Over 98% of women counseled by Planned Parenthood in 2000 chose abortion over adoption or parenting • Abortions outpace adoptions 145-1 • Tax dollars donated = $542 million in 2011-2012 • $87.4 million in excess revenue • Targets college students, low income neighborhoods, and minorities Margaret Sanger

  43. Stats don’t lie. Minority women constitute only about 13% of the female population (age 15-44) in the United States, but they underwent approximately 30% of the abortions. In Louisiana, 1 in 7 African American Pregnancies ends in abortion. Nationally, 1 in 2.5 African American Pregnancies ends in abortion. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, black women are more than 5 times as likely as white women to have an abortion. 79% of Planned Parenthood facilities are in minority communities.

  44. What can you do? Work to end abortion from the: TOP-DOWN AND BOTTOM-UP

  45. Top-Down: Making Abortion Illegal • If abortion is the unjust taking of innocent human life, then no government should ever allow abortion. Ways we can help to make abortion illegal: • Contacting your Senators, Congressmen, and other elected officials and asking them to vote for life on all life issues. • Staying current on legislation dealing with life issues. • Organizing friends, family, and peers to visibly communicate to society that abortion should not be allowed.

  46. Bottom-Up: Making Abortion Unthinkable • While it is essential that abortion be illegal, we also must change our culture so that the culture of death is not even present in the hearts and minds of Americans. • Know the issues and speak to others about the issues. • Getting involved in (or starting) clubs and groups holding pro-life events to educate and activate others. • Helping pro-life pregnancy centers that are helping women in crisis pregnancy situations. • Wear pro-life t-shirts (www.Abort73.com loveoffensively.com) • Living a chaste life and encouraging others to be chaste.

  47. Friends who are pregnant... 52% of all women having abortions are 18-24, while many younger than 18 have abortions. If you encounter someone with an unexpected pregnancy: Be compassionate and non-judgmental. Listen. Focus on her, not the baby. Remind her that she needs to explore all options; abortion facilities are only selling abortion. Direct her to a local pregnancy center that offers free and confidential help. If heavily considering abortion, share facts about how abortion will cause her physical and emotional problems. If all else fails, show her images of unborn fetal development.
