Blog 1: Spribrooklyn.com BUSTING MYTHS ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA Mental health has been a subject for many of the Hollywood movies, but they generally are an object of confusion or worse, commonly refer to as the affected person being ‘crazy’. That is not the case, it should be understood that mental diseases are illness – just like people get physically ill, same is the case with mental health. One such disorder is schizophrenia, which has many myths associated with it. For a disease to be treated effectively, it is very important to be aware of its distinctsymptoms. So here we are trying to address the common misconceptions about schizophrenia. Myth: Schizophrenia is a rare condition. Fact: According to Schizophrenia research studies in New York City, it is not rare. The risk of developing schizophrenia is widely accepted and is considered to be around 1 in 100. Myth: People affected with schizophrenia cannot be helped. Fact: However, the treatment of schizophrenia may be long-term, the outlook and prognosis for this disorder is not hopeless. If treated properly, people with schizophrenia can enjoy a long and happy life. Myth: Schizophrenia is a "split personality" or can be referred as multiple personalities. Fact: Both the disorders are different and have a lot of distinctions. Schizophrenia is a more common disorder than multiple personality disorder. People affected with schizophrenia do not have split personalities, rather, they are “split off” from the reality. Myth: People with schizophrenia are dangerous. Fact: Although schizophrenia can sometimes lead to violent behavior – thanks to delusions and hallucinations, but most schizophrenic people are not a danger to others. Many Schizophrenia research studies have concluded that this is a manageable disease and with proper medication, a patient can effectively handle the condition and lead a happy life without any troubles.
