  1. The OPMS – One Page Management SystemA ‘language’ for complex issues Fundamentals

  2. A ‘Language’ to discuss complex issues: ‘prose+structural graphics’ So what is ‘structural graphics’? Here’s a simple structural graphic: Idea 1 Idea 2 The picture and its translation (along with any other explanation required) constitute ‘prose+structural graphics’ The arrow stands for a particular relationship, e.g.:“leads to” (in this case) and the relationship between the ideas, shown as an arrow In prose, the above structural graphic means: “Idea 1 leads to Idea 2”. That sounds just too simplistic to deserve to be stated, but check out what follows in the next slides! Fundas

  3. Creating a world-class organization Making our organization a truly exciting place to work in “may contribute to” Challengingeach member of staff to develop himself/herself fully Using well defined methodologies, we create graphical pictures showing inter-relationships between elements to represent our ‘mental models’ of the systems we wish to create Fundas

  4. If ‘A’ ‘B’, and if ‘B’ ‘C’, then ‘A’ MUST ‘C’ (where ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ are elements and stands for the specific transitive relationship under consideration) The relationships in these pictures are ‘transitive’, which means: This simple idea has enormous ramifications (in regard to construction of these models as well as to their interpretation), some of which will be hinted at in the following slides Fundas

  5. “may contribute to” Interpretive Structural Model To enable each member of our staff to develop most effectively To make our organisation a truly exciting place to work in To help each person develop himself/herself as an individual To provide effective counseling for perceived needs of staff To challenge each member of staff develop himself/herself to maximum possible To provide all needed facilities for effective work and recreation Fundas

  6. “may contribute to” Even when the model comprises hundreds or thousands of elements, we can always focus on a small number of those elements in the full confidence that we have not lost sight of anything. This is an ‘Interpretive Structural Model’ (ISM), one of the two powerful modeling tools we use based on the seminal contributions of Professor John N. Warfield to systems science Interpretive Structural Modeling enables us to view systems in the context of specific ‘transitive’ relationships that may be relevant in the system at specific periods of its evolution THINGS TO DO Current focus Fundas

  7. John Warfield’s ‘Interactive Management’ comprises a set of methodologies to enable problem solvers to generate and clarify ideas and two powerful modeling tools to enable them to ‘structure’, or organise ideas generated. You’ve just seen ISM, one of the modeling tools. Fundas

  8. I illustrate the second modeling tool, Field Representation (FR) method, with a ‘second-order’ model -- a ‘model of models’, the OPMS – on the next slide with no further explanation. I shall later present more on FR. The OPMS ‘leads to’ and ‘enables’ the developments illustrated thereafter. Fundas

  9. All aspects of the ‘Mission’ – no matter how large or ambitious, can be captured on a single page, with linkages to all details! This is a ‘generic’ model, applicable to any Mission! It’s an ‘Operating System for the Human Mind’! Fundas

  10. The ‘Fundamental Model’ Fundas

  11. Bold arrows mean “lead(s) to” Feedback Means “applied to” OPMS Process Trigger Questions ACTION Real World Mental Models Representations of Mental Models Elements This fundamental model, through the OPMS, enables a powerful ‘problem-solving loop’ to develop in the individual/group mind Comparison We claim that OPMS is by far THE most effective means available to create needed changes in our mental models, and to guide appropriate action on the real world! Fundas

  12. Interpret Model Action Monitor Crystallize “enables” Capture “leads to” Our powerful‘Business Process Model’ develops by systematically building on this loop “Problem-solving loop Fundamental Model Fundas

  13. Industry Verticals Strategic Vision & Implementation Mechanisms “enable(s)” Management Tools Enabling Process Fundas

  14. Enables The Business Process Model – a macro picture Enables Enables The ‘type’ of enablement is somewhat different at each level Fundas
