  2. Famous author • Charles Dickens is probably the most famous author in the englishlanguage

  3. Why is he so famous ? • He wrote about the ordinary people and the difficult lives they had. • He wrote his stories in exciting chapters so people looked forward to the next chapter.

  4. Birth • Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812

  5. Working • As a young boy he had to work in a factory which was cruel , had rats running around the floor, was cold, dark and miserable.

  6. School • He only went to school for short periods because his father was regularly in Debtors’ prison

  7. Journalist • As Charles could read and write he became a journalist for the newspaper. • Newspapers were popular at this time.

  8. 1836 Marriage • He married Catherine Hogarth in 1836 • They were to have 10 children

  9. Books • Oliver twist • A tale of two cities • Great expectations • A Christmas carol • Pickwick papers

  11. Famous characters • Scrooge=Mean Miser • Fagin=Fence for thieves • Mr Bumble=Cruel orphanage head • Pip=A kind thoughtful boy • Mrs.Gargary= Cruel step mother • Bill Sykes= Evil thief • Dodger= Young pickpocket

  12. Other writings • Dickens wrote many books and other articles for newspapers etc.

  13. Plan • He would put one chapter per week into the newspaper so that people would buy it every week to see what happened next

  14. Speeches • Charles went to America to make speeches against slavery

  15. Death • He died in 1858 aged 46 and is one of the most famous people buried in Westminster Abbey in London
