Listening Orientation • Belief that person has capacity for self-insight and problem solving“how does this person see themselves and their situation”? • Empathy – understanding others’ thoughts and feelings • Realness – openness and frankness on part of coach • Concreteness – focussing on specifics and not generalities • Deviate – if required, ask for an opinion

  2. Reflective Technique • Technique for clarifying and re-stating what a person has said: • Increases the listener’s understanding of the other person • Helps others clarify their thoughts • Reassures others that listener has heard • Principles • More listening than talking • Responding to what is personal and not impersonal • Restating and clarifying what the other has said • Trying to understand feelings and not just facts • Working to understand others’ frame of reference • Responding with empathy.
