  1. Meridian / PFSMDSS Capabilities Leon Osborne Meridian Environmental Technology, Inc.

  2. Range of Solutions • Web-Based MDSS • Offers agencies a simple pathway to full MDSS implementation • Stand-Alone MDSS • Provides full-featured MDSS functionality • In-Vehicle MDSS • Provides route-specific forecasts, recommendations and radar back into the truck

  3. Solid Scientific Foundation • MPower™weather forecasts • Ensemble-based • Meteorologist edited • High-resolution grids for site-specific forecasts anywhere • HiCAPS™pavement forecasts • Sophisticated Mass / Energy balance model • Enhanced with PFS MDSS module additions • Validated with field observations

  4. Web MDSS • Range of Options • “Classic MDSS” • Provides weather and pavement forecasts assuming no maintenance is performed. • “Best Practices MDSS” • Classic features plus customized recommendations tailored to agencies’ typical response to combinations of weather and road conditions. • “Dynamic MDSS” • Provides recommendations dynamically generated by the MDSS. Adheres to local resource constraints, but perhaps stepping outside of normal operating practices – provides scientifically sound alternatives to normal practices.

  5. “Classic MDSS” • Traditional service providing unlimited site-specific forecasts, enhanced map graphics, ‘no-maintenance’ pavement forecasts, and other supporting data displays

  6. Enhanced Web MDSS Solutions • “Best Practices” and “Dynamic MDSS” provide an easy step up from the traditional service by adding maintenance recommendations & results

  7. Stand-Alone MDSS • Comprehensive Solution • Integrates past & present maintenance actions, weather, and road condition reports • Adheres to resource & practice constraints, and allows for day-to-day adjustments of those constraints • Provision for optimal, standard, and ‘what-if?’ virtual maintenance actions • Features geared toward all levels of management • One-stop-shop concept • Developed in concert with PFS states

  8. High Resolution Gridded Weather Forecast Database High Resolution Gridded Weather Observations Database Maintenance Practices and Activities Databases Maintenance Actions Modifications to Standard Practices Propose Alternative Treatment MDSS Processing & Integration System ‘Optimal’ Treatment & Expected Results Road Condition Analysis & Forecast System (RCAF) Results Expected from Proposed Treatment Road Condition Observations / Analyses Resources Used / Available Observed & Analyzed Roadway State Databases Available Resources Database RWIS BLUE: Forecast / Theoretical RED: Real-Time / Actual BLACK: Applies to Both SOLID: Automatic or Semi-Automatic Process DASHED: User-Driven Process Roadway & Environment Characterization Database

  9. Alert Panel • Provides an Overview of the Forecast Conditions for Viewed Area • Equivalent Information is Available on a Per-Route Basis within Map View

  10. Map View • Provides an Integrated Spatial Display of Weather Conditions, Road Conditions, and Maintenance Actions • Includes Dynamic Zoom, Loop, and Overlay Controls • Features Displayed are Selectable For More Detailed Information (Drill-Down)

  11. Map View • Time Slider Allows User to Look Backward or Forward in Time • Customized Map Views are Stored on a Per-User Basis

  12. Route View • Displays Information for an MDSS Route in a Time-Series Format • Conveys Past, Present, & Future Weather Conditions, Road Conditions, and Maintenance Actions

  13. Route View • Generates & Displays Maintenance Recommendation Based On Present Road Condition, Forecast Weather Conditions, and Adjustable Resource & Material Constraints • Can Identify and Simulate Anticipated Response of the Road to Standard Local Operating Practices

  14. Route View • A Simple Sub-Interface of the Route View Allows the User to Test Alternative Maintenance Actions

  15. One-Stop Shop Concept • Put Everything Together in One Place

  16. One-Stop Shop Concept • Drill-Down Capabilities for More Detailed Information on Most Data Types

  17. In-Vehicle MDSS • Puts Maintenance Decision Support back into the plow operator’s hands • Vehicle- and route-specific content • Radar image of immediate vicinity of truck • Short term forecast for current route • Maintenance recommendations
