  1. Laboratory Facilities Department of Computer Science University of Saskatchewan 2005-06

  2. Platforms • Computer Scientists must be able to master many platforms during their careers. • Laboratory experience will necessitate the use of more than one software platform and as many hardware platforms as we can manage.

  3. Software Platforms • Two kinds: Open Source and Commercial. • Open Source: NetBSD, Linux • Commercial: Windows, Solaris, MacOSX Server • Coming soon: Mac OSX clients

  4. Software Library • Microsoft Academic Alliance • Userid and password will be emailed to your @mail.usask.ca address • Do not use NSID password • Open Source software distributions • Mandrake Linux available to ALL students • http://distro.usask.ca/

  5. Hardware Platforms • Intel Pentium and Xeon 32-bit (various speeds) • SUN Sparc 64-bit • PowerPC 32-bit Mac OSX Server • Beowulf parallel super computer • AMD Opteron system on the way

  6. Laboratory “Settings” • Instructional labs: Spinks 3 and Arts 265 • Open access labs: single workstations and “mentor” seats. • Small group settings: Smart Board and “Break out” rooms. • Research laboratories belonging to research groups: DISCUS, MADMUC, Aries, IMG, Bioinformatics, S/Eng

  7. Groupware • iHelp • http://www.cs.usask.ca/i-help • A local implementation of SourceForge, open source software development facility called “Papyrus” at: • http://papyrus.usask.ca/ • “Compile Farm” to include MacOSX, Solaris, NetBSD on Alpha, and so on

  8. Windows Terminal Server • Access to Windows Terminal Server environment from any platform, including Open Source • Discworld.usask.ca

  9. Terminal Server Software • Adobe suite: • MS Visual Studio .NET • MS Office • Java • MatLab • AISee Graph Layout

  10. Locations • Individual research project laboratories • Spinks Addition 3rd floor • Arts 265 • Other spaces in Thorvaldson Building
