  1. The development of a pressure-sensitive valve for controlling blood pressure. F. Tang, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong.

  2. A. Need for such a device. • (1) artificial heart – the valve (together with a pouch) • enable the making of an artificial heart with a greater • pumping action to allow a higher level of activity in the • patient. • At rest, the excess blood flow is simply taken care off by • the pouch.

  3. (2) hypertensive patient – • in case of non-compliance or “failure of access to medication”. • when the BP goes up too much, the valve will open and BP • will drop again.

  4. (3) normal person • in case of haemorrhage (and decrease in BP), blood will drain • from pouch to the general circulation.

  5. BP = CO X TPR where BP is blood pressure CO is cardiac output TPR is total peripheral resistance in patients with artificial hearts CO in hypertensive patients TPR

  6. B. The Apparatus. Pouch – must be distensible & pressure-generating Valve – must have an electronic device that is pressure -sensitive to control the opening & closing of the valve.

  7. C. Test in animal models. • 1. increase in BP - volume loading. • infusion of noradrenaline. • 2. Decrease in BP - bleeding • Monitor BP to see how fast it is brought back to normal • by using this device.
