(Page 24 of AG) • If your career plan is different than what you found on EXPLORE and DISCOVER, then select the appropriate Career Major. • Check out the Academic Guide or CGHS Guidance website for more details on career majors.

  8. 4 Year Course Plan Key Points for Course Selection • Required Course Subjects are already entered on 4 year plan. You will need to click on the item to select a level or specific course. • Diploma Type: Make sure you meet the requirements of your Diploma Type. This includes Foreign Language, Fine Arts, and AP/Dual Credit requirements for Academic Honors Diploma. • Pay attention to the prerequisites and suggested classes for each course. This is one of the purposes of a 4 Year Plan. • One Semester vs. Full Year Courses • CAREER MAJOR ELECTIVES • Are you considering Central Nine, Early College or The Center for 21st Century Learning?

Central Nine Career Center • C9 Website:       www.central9.k12.in.us • Current 9th graders can apply for a C9 program next year if they will not be taking more than the following courses: •  1 English • 1 Math • 1 Science • PE/Health • C9 students will receive 4 elective credits per semester next year. • Applications for C9 next year are available from your Guidance Counselor. • For those applying, fill out your application and driving form with parent signature, and return to your counselor ASAP. • Applications are dated as received, first come, first serve (however, juniors/seniors have first priority). • ALL SOPHOMORES ATTENDING C9 WILL RIDE THE BUS TO AND FROM CENTRAL 9 NEXT YEAR.

PLTW: Biomedical Sciences • The PLTW Biomedical Sciences™ program offers high school students a dynamic curriculum that uses real world experience and hands on learning. Students with interest in exploring the variety that medicine offers will find PLTW’s Biomedical Sciences™ program a fantastic doorway to the future of the industry.

PLTW: Biomedical Sciences Course #1: Principles of the Biomedical Sciences · Student Work involves the study of human medicine, research processes, and an introduction to bioinformatics · Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions including: heart disease, diabetes, sickle cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious disease Course # 2: Human Body Systems · Students study basic human physiology, especially in relationship to human health. A central theme is how the body systems work together to maintain internal balance and good health · Students use data acquisition software to monitor body functions and use the anatomy with clay manikins to study body structure. Course #3: Medical Interventions · Student projects will investigate various medical interventions that extend and improve the quality of life including: diagnostics, surgery, bio-nanotechnology, pharmacology, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and life style choices. Course #4: Science Research In this capstone course, students will design and conduct experiments related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease or illness. They will apply their knowledge and skills to answer questions or to solve problems related to the biomedical sciences.

  29. Who should take these Biomedical Sciences courses? All students interested in pursuing a career in biological sciences, emergency services healthcare or medicine. The rigorous curriculum uses the activities, projects, and problems module that is grounded in real-world relevance. This style of learning doesn’t just create an exciting learning environment where the possibilities of the medical field come to life but it also teaches students to: • · Solve problems • · Participate as part of a team • · Lead teams • · Conduct research • · Understand real-world problems • · Analyze data • · Learn outside the classroom

What is the Academy of Finance? • National Academy Foundation member program • Exposes students to careers in finance Mission: • Provide student with specialized courses and skills in finance • Provide student with solid financial foundation for further study • Provide student with real world experiences • Provide student future financial focus and direction

  32. The Academy Program • Includes standard curricula • 1 or 2 specialized courses each semester • College-level course in the senior year • 6-8 week paid internships in summer • Job shadowing, mentoring, and field trips including Kelley School of Business and Chicago Financial District

How Do Students Participate? • Interested students apply – get applications from Guidance office or Mrs. Buck in Room 303 or any Business teacher • Selected according to school criteria – teacher recommendations, good attendance, desire to be involved • Commit to meeting program standards • Commit to an internship
