The Renaissance • The growth of cities and trade gradually broke up feudalism. • Merchant families used their wealth to help artists and scholars explore new ways of thinking. • This was the beginning of a new golden age of art, literature, and science. • Renaissance is a French word meaning “rebirth.”

  3. The Renaissance • “Rebirth” of classics – (Greeks & Romans) Europeans studied Aristotle and Plato again • A new way of thinking, humanism, focused on life in the present and emphasized individual achievements. • “Rebirth” in education, change, and hope • Beginning of scientific thought
