  1. The Future Leadership of St Michael’s Church In 2006 the PCC of the Team Parish agreed that every Team church should establish its own Local Leadership Team (LLT) This presentation outlines how this will come into being at St Michael’s

  2. Why change? • The church is in a mission situation once again • Moving much more from a Pastoral model of church to a Mission-shaped way of being church • New approaches are needed (as well as retaining some of the old ones) • Our current structures limit our ability to do this – frustrating both laity and clergy • We are not saying that what we have is wrong, but that it is not appropriate for the future

  3. The Lesson of Exodus 18.13-26 • Moses spent all his waking hours settling issues and managing the life of the community • Jethro advised him to appoint ‘leaders of the people’ • You will not wear yourself out, nor all the people • This was delegation

  4. The Lesson of Acts 6.1-7 • The apostles got caught up in ‘running the show’ and neglected their true ministry • Settling disputes between people, and handling everyday management matters of the community • The early Church had to restructure itself to enable the mission of the church to happen • “The Word of God continued to spread”

  5. Ephesians 4.11-13 - Roles • The structure of the Church developed • Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers • It is wrong to assume that the clergy can do all of these • But it is not wrong to assume that God’s people can do all of these • “to prepare all God’s people for the work of Christian service.” 4:12

  6. The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion • To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom • To teach, baptise and nurture new believers • To respond to human need by loving service • To seek to transform unjust structures of society • To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth(Bonds of Affection-1984 ACC-6 p49, Mission in a Broken World-1990 ACC-8 p101) A text for further study?

  7. PROCLAIM TEACH RESPOND SEEK RENEW

  8. Doing a Few Things Well We cannot do everything, so the Church Council (DCC) has decided that we should concentrate on the following priorities: • Worship • Mission • Pastoral & Social • Young People • Personal Prayer Passions

  9. Worship: that also serves people who do not yet attend Mission: that has an initial focus on the Town Centre as well as looking beyond our locality Pastoral & Social: that cares for church and non-church people and creates a place for them to belong Young People: that ties in with our Team Strategy of having a full-time Youth Worker Personal Passions/Burdens: that strongly encourages initiatives from small groups of people as they live out their calling

  10. To enable this to happen . . . We will now establish A Local Leadership Team (LLT) of about six people who will Oversee and Direct the ministry and mission of St Michael’s church Having a small team of leaders is always more preferable to having singular leadership especially in times of change. Biblical leadership was always plural.

  11. Local leadership Team (LLT) To Direct and Oversee the ministry of our church the LLT will have the task of answering the following questions: • What is important to us? VALUES • Where are we going? DIRECTION • How will we get there? STRATEGY It is answerable to the Church Council

  12. Wardens Rector Leadership Team – schematic map Church Council Leadership Team Increasing the ‘leadership capacity’ of our organisation

  13. The Role of the Church Council The DCC/PCC is the legally accountable body of the church. Its role will continue to be to: • Decide policy • Agree strategy • Monitor finance • Oversee church assets • Facilitate communication

  14. The Role of the Clergy The clergy’s role will primarily be as: • Spiritual teachers and guides • Instigators and encouragers of mission NB There will still be a Rector of St Michael’s Clergy retain their legal status with the C of E Rector will be on the LLT and the PCC Full description of role in Finding our Calling Report September 2006

  15. Where do we go from here? • We are now going to set up the Local Leadership Team. • We are now praying and seeking who should form this Team. • We are therefore asking you to put forward names.

  16. They should be people who . . . Have a concern for the entire breadth of the life of the church, and not just one part of it Are able to work within a team of people Are of good character and have the support of a wide number of people Will prioritise the time required, and bring prayer and enthusiasm to the task

  17. If you wish to put someone’s name forward • Please ask them first • Then pass any names onto Rector or Vicky Darlington (DCC secretary) • If you would like to put your own name forward . . . . . • Please talk it through with another church member first; for prayer and support

  18. Please Pray Not so much for ourselves But for the Town and for the World That what we do will be of benefit to others And so help us grow in Christ
