  5. Governor’s Veterans Education Task Force • Met at campuses across the state in 2014 • Comprised of • Dept. of Veterans Services, • Higher Education Commission, • Legislators, • College Presidents, • College faculty, • Student Veterans • One Goal • “Develop a strategic plan to make Tennessee the number one state in the country for veteran educational achievement and employment.”

Governor’s Veterans Education Task Force • Tennessee ranked in the bottom 10 of states with Veterans under 25 • ~8% of Tennessee’s Veterans are between 18-34 • Yet had brought in $237 million in federal educational benefits (2013) • U.S. Census of 2012 placed 35% of Tennessee’s Veterans having some college with 23% having a Bachelor’s or higher. • Post-9/11 GI Bill became a major motivation for TN Veterans • higher education experienced a 195% increase in Veteran enrollment between 2008-2013

Governor’s Veterans Education Task Force • Establish an annual Veterans Education Academy for higher education institution’s faculty and staff • Develop a competitive funding grant to motivate innovative programs to recruit and retain Student Veterans to degree completion. • Create a comprehensive online educational resource to include a program to show the transfer of military service to college credits

Veterans Education Academy • 3 Years of statewide training for faculty, staff, and leaders • Understand the Student Veterans and the military culture, • Address Veterans transitional challenges, • Discuss best practices for Student Veteran support • Prepare an institutional action plan for Veteran success • Builds Partnerships

Student Veteran Organization Summit • 3 Years of statewide training for Student Veterans and Advisors • Create • Grow • Sustain • Collaboration and Resources • Allows campuses to connect • Builds off past experience • Introduction of Team Rubicon, Team RWB, and Entrepreneurial programs • SVA Chapter Building

  12. Data Collection • Choosing the Right Metrics • Who are Student Veterans? • How many don’t have benefits? • How do they enter college? • What is the definition of completion? • Can we retain them for the first year? • Are they getting a job within their field of study?

  14. Veteran Reconnect Grant • Up to $1 Million for Improvements each year • 2015: 11 schools awarded • 2016: 6 schools awarded • 2017: 13 schools awarded • Focus: • Creating Veteran Resource Center • Expanding Services • Hiring Director of Veteran services • Prior Learning Assessment

Prior Learning Assessment • 85% of Student Veterans who graduated from the University of Tennessee since 2008 were transfer students. • ~83,000 veterans with some college credit but no degree • Veteran Reconnect Grant 2017 • Develop and implement new credit evaluation process • Easy, clear access to information about transferring military credits • THEC online platform of military credits • Leadership (buy-in) • Marketing (sell-out)

Initial Steps • Communicate with other Student Veteran Organizations • Identify the representative(s) of the Student Veteran Organizations to request meetings with: • State Department of Veteran Services/Affairs • Commission on Higher Learning or Post-Secondary Education • Meetings should have: • Clear and concise messaging, with a strategic purpose behind interaction to begin the process of progress to engage state government in investing in Student Veterans • Strategic business solutions supported by factual data

Why Invest in Student Veterans? • Student Veterans: • Bring unique, worldly views and life experiences to our classrooms • Succeed in comparison to peers • Provide positive financial impact • Serve to benefit their community and any organization • Are also the best employees • What shows this investment in Veterans? • Showcasing interest in the recruitment and hiring of Veterans • Programs seeking to train hiring managers to recruit the Veteran Community • Providing the strategic pieces of transitional support
