WHAP Essay Basics • Typical 5-paragraph essay Paragraph 1: Thesis statement (argument) Paragraphs 2 – 4: Body (evidence) Paragraph 5: Conclusion & restatement of thesis • Use the rule of three CC = 2 similarities & 1 difference (or opposite) CCOT = 2 continuities & 1 change (or opposite) C/E = 3 causes with 3 effects or 1 cause with 3 effects

  6. WHAP CC Essay Prompt Directions: You are to answer the following question. You should spend 5 minutes organizing or outlining your essay. Write an essay that: • Has a relevant thesis and supports that thesis with appropriate historical evidence. • Addresses all parts of the question. • Makes direct, relevant comparisons. • Analyzes relevant reasons for similarities and differences. Prompt: Analyze similarities and differences in the rise of TWO of the following empires. A West African Sudanic empire (Mali OR Ghana OR Songhay) The Aztec Empire The Mongol Empire

  7. WHAP CC Thesis Both Mali and the Mongols were similar in that they rose to be influential and powerful empires. They also consolidated power of neighboring kingdoms through their trade practices. However, they were different in their use of violence to establish their regimes.
