  1. Grey Nun Academy’s 2014-2015 Back to School Night Welcome to Mrs. Montemarano’s Third Grade

Class Schedule • Posted on the Classwebpage • Each day, time is dedicated to Mathematics and Integrated Language Arts. • Religion is studied four times per week. • Social Studies and Science are each offered three to four times a week. • Spanish and Gym is twice per week. • Art, Music, Library and Computer is once per week.   3. Curriculum • A detailed listing of objectives to be covered for each subject area is available on the third grade website and on RenWeb: Third Grade Curriculum

  4. Language Arts • Using Scott Foresman materials as well as a collection of trade books, the students will experience: • Focused reading activities • Skill development • Writing workshops • Phonetic recognition • Vocabulary recognition

  5. Reading • Balanced Literacy • Read aloud • Teacher modeled thinking • Shared reading • Occurs daily using weekly story • Focuses on comprehension, story structure, sentence structure, vocabulary, and phonics throughout the week • Guided reading • Books at appropriate level • Apply skills • Readers’ Theater based upon the text (fluency) • Independent reading • Response journal • Reading logs: read for 60 minutes per week.

  8. Religion The students are guided through reflective prayer, bible stories, religion terms, and appropriate activities. To increase their connection with the stories about Jesus’ life, skits will be performed by the students. Focus on Catholic Identity

  9. Social Studies • Experience various communities and the cultures that dwell within them • Become acquainted with the first people to inhabit the New World and their explorations of the land • Addresses various disciplines • History • Geography • Citizenship

  10. Science • Science experiments, videos, and activities will enrich your child’s knowledge on the topics introduced. • Four Areas • Life Science • Earth Science • Physical Science • Space and Technology

  18. Student Plan for Success SPS charts will be sent home in their Friday folders. At the end of each week, please sit down with your child and review their SPS chart with them. Reward their job well-done! Sign and return.

Homework Policy • Students are expected to read for 60 minutes a week and record their reading in a Reading Log, please sign the log and return it in their Friday Folders weekly. • Students record their assignments in their planners each afternoon. • Homework is also listed online (TeacherWeb and RenWeb) if you wish to check that everything was written down.   20. Homework Policy Any incomplete or forgotten homework will result in a check on the SPS. Points will be deducted off of their homework grade for the trimester dependent upon the frequency homework is assigned for that subject. The student will also be required to complete the assignment during the next recess period. You will be alerted to any missed work through their SPS.

  21. Absences • Unexpected absences • Please complete missed work within the next 3 school days. • Expected absences: • Please provide 1 week’s notice prior to a vacation so that materials can be prepared. • If there is a conflict, please contact me so that we can create a plan.

  22. Birthday Snacks/Celebrations All birthday snacks must arrive prior to our morning snack time. Avoid snacks that will trigger allergic reactions, i.e. nuts. Please refrain from sending in especially messy snacks. Please do not sent party invites home with students unless the entire class is included. Room Moms: Mrs. Tuzza & Mrs. Kirikian
