  1. Joining Paths Inkscape – Task 1

  2. Open Inkscape program. • Click on the Start Menu • Find the Inkscape icon and open the program

  3. Change document size. • File menu – Document Properties

  4. Change document size. • Width = 320 • Height = 200

  5. Set up a grid • Click on the Grid Tab at the top of that pop up window. • Click on New . • Enter • X = 20 • Y = 20 • Close pop up window

  6. Zoom In • Click – Zoom to fit page in window

  7. Draw first circle • Select the circle tool • The circle should be in the middle vertically and 3 units in from the left side.

  8. Draw first circle • Hold down the Shift Button and click on the 3rd unit – this will create the circle from the center point instead of the regular upper corner. • Drag out 2 units wide and high

  9. Duplicate the circle. • Right click the circle and select Duplicate • Grab and drag the circle in the same spot – but on the opposite side.

  10. Draw in rectangle. • Click on the rectangle tool • Start in the left circle and draw over to the right circle • Only 2 units high

  11. Join the paths • Click on the left circle • Hold Shift key • Click on the bar

  12. Join the paths • Click on Paths from upper menu • Click on Union

  13. Join the paths • Click on the combined shape • Click on the right circle • Select Paths • Union

  14. Create text • Click on the text tool (left) • Type in your Name • Click on the Text Properties options (top) • Change from default font and size.

  15. Create text • Change Fill – white • Change Stroke - black

  16. Create a new layer • Click on upper menu – Layer • Add Layer • Name it “Trial” • Position “Below current”

  17. Draw red rectangle • Drag your name into the center of the shape. • Draw in a temporary rectangle under the shape and text portion of the page • Change the fill colour to red

  18. Remove text from shape • Select the text and Shift-click the blue shape • Select Paths from upper menu • Choose Difference

  19. Resulting Object • The text and shape becomes a whole object • We use the text like a cookie cutter to remove the material from the shape.

  20. Finished • Save your file as “beanr_task1.svg”
