  4. Issues Explored Throughout the Year The quest for truth and the process of self-discovery Influence of the Gods and natural phenomena during the epic quest Overcoming obstacles in the face of adversity Developing integrity and accepting human flaws

  5. Will the Real Homer Please Stand Up?

Unit Goals for The Odyssey Students will be able to: Know who Homer is and his important influence on literary history Think critically about literature and its function in history and culture Understand the elements of an epic hero quest and what makes Odysseus a true hero Identify key terms and their significance: nostos, flashback, hubris, kleos, eipthet, epic simile (Homeric simile) and Homeric Digression

  7. Unit Goals Continued Identify major characters, symbols and themes Focus on the themes of maturation & identity and the concept of initiation and the passage from youth to adulthood

Introductory LessonObjective: Understand the Elements of an Epic • Brainstorm various epics today, e.g., Braveheart, Star Wars • Review “Elements of an Epic” worksheet and discuss • In small groups, review different comic books (e.g., Superman, X-Men, Batman) and identify different elements • Small groups present findings

  10. Review & Discuss Key Terms/Concepts Epic Poem – long narrative poem consisting of complex tales Homer’s epics tell of the adventures of heroes, either in poem or prose format Epic Hero – a man who seems able to conquer most problem he encounters, although he doesn’t possess “super powers

  11. ~ Faithful to his family, country, and God ~ Brave, though he often feels fear ~ Overcomes fears because he knows he has responsibilities (to defeat evil and allow goodness to prevail) ~ Intelligent – he relies on his brains ~ Greater forces, e.g., the Gods, help guide him on his quest, but the epic hero accomplishes his goals with determination Reflective Journal Activity Journey of an Archetypal Hero What is an Epic Hero?
