Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  5. What is an Synchronous Motor? • A synchronous motor is an Alternate Current actuator that has a zero slip under the usual operating conditions. • The rotor is exited by a DC field to prevent slip The formal definition of slip is: S = (ns , n) x 100 percent/ns Where: • ns = synchronous speed • n = actual speed ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. Synchronous Motor Characteristics: • A three-phase stator similar to that of an induction motor • A wound rotor with the same number of poles as the stator, supplied by an external source of direct current (DC) • Starts as an induction motor • Synchronous motors will run at synchronous speed in accordance with the formula: ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. Advantages Synchronous Motor • Precise speed regulation • Synchronous motors have speed / torque characteristics which are ideally suited for direct drive of large horsepower, low-rpm loads such as reciprocating compressors. • Operate at an improved power factor, thereby improving overall system power factor and eliminating or reducing utility power factor penalties. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. Most Important Parts ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Major Applications • Valve Operations • Metering Pumps • Cryogenic Pumps • Dampers • Table Lifts • Simple Position & Process Controls • Stirring • Linear Actuators • Edge Guides • Variable Transformers • Conveyor Systems • Remote Control of Switches ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Principle of operation • The AC Synchronous Motor maintains its fixed rotation speed in synchronization with the frequency of the electric power source (AC). • The fixed speed of the AC Synchronous Motor is determined by the pole spacing in the stator units. • A synchronous motor has no starting torque, therefore a squirrel cage is added to create starting torque ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Efficiency Curve ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Types of excitation System • Brush-type excitation system ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Brushless-type excitation system ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Selecting Procedure • Required specifications • Operating speed • Load torque • Power supply voltage • Frequency • Calculating operating speed • The speed should be calculated with caution since a bad result can be very difficult to reverse once the motor purchased ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. 3. Calculating synchronous speed Formula: RPMsyn = (120 x f)/ Np Where:              RPMsyn = synchronous speed (in rpm) f  = supply frequency in (cycles/sec) Np =number of motor poles 4. Calculate required torque Formula: T = F x D Where: T = torque (in lb-ft) F = force (in lb) D = distance (in ft) ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. 5. Select the motor and the gearhead • This step will follow all the calculations and leads to buy the motor with the characteristics that we wanted, also we end up with the gearhead needed. 6. Confirm the speed of the motor • Check if we have what we wanted at the start of the problem. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Principal sellers • Hansen-motor corporation • Renesas • Oshore • TMC Tech • Changzhou Chengli Electrical Equipment Co. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
