  1. Outliers by Malcolm GladwellDirections for Successful Person Power Point • Choose a person YOU think is SUCCESSFUL. • It can be anyone: athlete, musician, business leader, actor, director, skater, professional gamer, and so on… • However, you must be able to find RESEARCHon this person. We will be using both our PVHS database and the Internet for research. • You need 4 different sources for this power point. • Your last slide with be your Bibliography in MLA 8 format • This person will be the focus of your research paper. Choose wisely. Make sure you can find reliable sources.

  2. Directions for each slide. • Directions: Create a power point of someone you consider successful. Follow this slide format EXACTLY. A portion of your grade for this project is simply following the directions! • Your power point will be exactly 8 slides: • Slide one: Introduction & thesis • Slide two: Who your successful person is • Slide three: How your person became successful • Slide four: Why your person is the epitome of success • Slide five: Who helped your person to become successful • Slide six: Background that helped your person to succeed • Slide seven: Conclusion • Slide eight: Bibliography in MLA 8 format • Your power point is due Jan 28 (B-day) or Jan 29 (A-day)

Google Slides • Sign on the Chrome book using YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT • Create the slides using Google Slides • Save on your Google account by giving your project a title • Before the due date, PRINT out a black & white hard copy at home using 6 slides PER PAGE • DO NOT print full page slides! • SEE ME IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO PRINT 6 SLIDES PER PAGE ON GOOGLE SLIDES

In-text Citations from Internet Example: (CNN.com) • Use the “SIGNAL WORD/ PHRASE” in your citation: • the first word/phrase that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article title, website name). • No page numbers or URLs in-text citations • See Slide Eight directions for what to include in the citations & the correct punctuation (italics vs. quotation marks) • Look for: • 1. Author • 2. Title of article • 3. Title of the webpage

  5. SLIDE ONE: INTRO • Name of Successful Person • An image of your person • A thesis that makes a claim about your successful person • Your Name & Period

  6. Slide Two: Who • Who is your person? What is his/her occupation? • Why do you pick this person? How are they successful? • Include TWO images. • IMPORTANT NOTE: YOUR 8TH SLIDE WILL BE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY. AS YOU CREATE THIS POWER POINT, COPY AND PASTE EACH URL TO THAT SLIDE OR CITE YOUR SOURCES IN MLA FORMAT AS YOU GO.

  7. Slide Three: Why • What are the factors that led to this person’s success? • What is he/she like? Why does he/she stand out as successful? • Personality? • Intelligence? • Lifestyle? • Self-made? Etc… • INCLUDE facts from your research. Use in-text citations to credit your sources per slide. Example: (NFL.com) • INCLUDE at least one image

  8. Slide Four: Definition of Success • How do you define success? How does this person exemplify your definition of success? • How this person is successful? • Is he/she a genius? A tycoon? A Rock Star? An athlete? A business leader? A politician/ government officer? • Include statistics and facts to support your claim that this person IS successful. • Include at least one image.

  9. Slide Five: Help • Did anyone help him/her on his/her journey to success? Who? • Explain how you think these people helped your person to become successful. • Include at least one image.

  10. Slide Six: Background • What is this person’s background? • Where are is he/she from? Culture? Legacy? Etc? • What factors do you think led to his/her success? • Passion? Talent? Hard work? Time? Family connections? • Include at least one image

  11. Slide Seven: Conclusion • Make a final claim (thesis) explaining: • How do you define success? • How does this successful person represent your definition of success? Be specific. • Include one image.

  12. Slide Eight: Bibliography • Use MLA 8 format for your Bibliography • Not all Internet sources will have all of the information you find in print sources. Look for the following and use the FIRST one you can find: • 1. Author and/or editor name (if available); last name, first. • Many Internet sources do not have an author • 2. Title of the article/the webpage in quotation marks • Example, if there is no author, then use the article name (“Sandra Bullock”). • 3. If there’s no title on the webpage, the use the title of the website in italics (IMBD)
