LANGSTON HUGHES (1902-1967) • Langston Hughes was an American poet, novelist and poet. • Hughes is best known for his contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, a literary movement during the 1920’s that recognized and celebrated African American culture through art and literature. • He is best know for his first book of poetry: The Weary Blues, which focused on black themes incorporated jazz rhythms of the era.

  3. Harlem What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? A Dream Deferred

  4. Dramatic Situation: A young man/ woman is prevented from attaining his dream. • Dreams are savory or sweet • Unfulfilled • Can have explosive Outcomes

  5. The speaker in this poem is an African American male or female.

  6. Tone • The tone in this poem is one of melancholy and angst.

  7. Poetical Devices • Line 5: Simile “Does it fest likea sore—” • Line 7: Simile “Does it stink likerotten meat?” • Line 1: Alliteration “What happens to a dream deferred” • Line 8: Assonance “Or does it crust and sugar over—”

  8. Theme • The theme in Langston Hughes’ poem is that dream can turn rotten if it is not fulfilled or put off for too long.

  9. Our Analysis

  10. Line 1“Harlem” • African Americans residing in Harlem (and America at large) experienced oppression. Harlem was the epic center of the Harlem Renaissance.

  11. Line 2“What happens to a Dream Deferred?” • Defer (n.) to put off or delay; to submit to another’s wishes or opinions • Hughes is implying that one must delay the fulfillment of his/her dream— or reconcile oneself to the personal desires of another.

  12. Lines 3-4 “Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?” • A dream deferred may dry up, very much like a grape that loses its essence and turns into a raisin.

  13. Lines 5-6“Or does it fester like a sore/And then run?” • A deferred dream may fester and ooze like a an agitated sore. • It may also “run”—implying the dreamer may abandon the dream altogether.

  14. Lines 7-9 “Does it stink like rotten meat?/ Or crust and sugar over—/ like a syrupy sweet?” • An abandoned dream may smell like rotten meat, implying the dream has spoiled. • It may also take on the quality of something sickly sweet, which means that it has become nauseating and very unappealing to the dreamer.

  15. Lines 10-11“Maybe it just sags/Like a heavy load.” • A deferred dream may weigh the dreamer down like a heavy load. • A dream unfulfilled is burdensomeand it is a ponderous burden that weighs heavily on the dreamer.

  16. Line 12“Or does it explode?” • An oppressed dream may explode. • When someone is repressed too long he or she may rebel.

  17. Final Thoughts: Langston Hughes dreamed for freedom and equality for all human beings. Everyone should have access to their dreams.
