Antimicrobial activity of heparin bonded catheters Mermel LA et a JID 1993; 167: 920 • Bonded to the catheter surface with benzalkonium chloride (cationic surfactant) • Activity against micro-organisms correlated to their in vitro susceptibility to benzalkonium chloride (r=0.94) • Lost of > 50% antimicrobial activity within 24 hours • May account for the decrease in Swan Ganz CRB (1.0% vs 2.8%)
