Respond to 999 cases as a front line Paramedic What works • Patients who are life threateningly ill or injured get a response on scene in 8 minutes or less. What could be better • Not enough alternatives to A&E. • 9 in every 10 cases are presented to A&E (too many). • Need more pathways and decision support

  3. Better Health Better Care What’s the scope of my role? Delivery & support of SAS A&E service and NHS Lanarkshire out of hours service. What works • Effective support & collaboration across two different (still NHS!!) services. • Availability of alternative outcomes for patients. What could be better • Can’t offer this service to patients in hours • Professional barriers can still result in A&E attendances

Shifting the Balance of Care Summary of front line view • Role which is provided out of hours should be provided 24/7 • Has strong potential to deliver on the “right person, right place etc.” ethos (but doesn’t at the moment). • One NHS but more than one service lots of steps for the patient & hand offs for the Community Paramedic – need to be Clark Kent sometimes. • Patients use 999 as a “fast track” into NHS. • The NHS works best when it works as a team (and the patient gets a better deal).
