  1. PBIS PREPAREDNESS: Managing Multiple Priorities

  2. Essential Question: How can we manage multiple priorities?

  3. Warm Up How can we handle distractions and unforeseen events? • Tell a partner what unexpected situations arose this week that caused you to change your plans. • Allow your partner to do the same.

  4. Restriction or Freedom? Some people shudder when they think about using a time management schedule. They think that by using a schedule they will lose their freedom. These people fear they can no longer be spontaneous if they are committed to an inflexible schedule. Schedules can restrict you. But they also can free you by making your time go further. Imagine how much extra time you will have to spend with your friends, watch TV, listen to music, or do other things that you enjoy if you can learn how to use your time efficiently.

  5. Key Terms • Priorities – rank items in order of importance • Foreseeable events –predictable occurrences that could impede progress toward a goal • Unforeseeable events –chance occurrences that could impede progress toward a goal • Procrastinate – delay or put off something you need to do

  6. How do you prioritize? • The following slide will have six tasks to complete • Get a piece of paper and a pencil or pen • Write the order of how you would complete these tasks with a time schedule • Discuss with others how you were able to accomplish these tasks

  7. To Do List • Your dad is out of town so you have to watch your younger brother from 3:30–5:30 (until your Mom comes home). • Test in Biology tomorrow. • You have an evening meeting from 7:00–8:30 tonight. • Movie of the week 8:00–10:00, which you have been dying to see. • Straighten your room before going out this weekend (a requirement from your mother). • You have a project due in 2 days but you are required by your group to go to the store to purchase the supplies they will be using in class the next day.

  8. Class Discussion • Students will volunteer to share their time schedules • Discuss the creative ways students are able to complete all tasks

  9. Unexpected!! • What if mom did not arrive home at the usual 5:30? • How would you change your plans if mom was stuck in traffic until 6:15?

  10. Summarize Goals provide a game plan for putting our dreams into actions. Getting things done on a daily basis is where the rubber hits the road. To be successful academically, students need to be able to prioritize tasks and activities and manage their time wisely on a daily basis.
