  3. Activator • “We must find new lands from which we can easily obtain raw materials and at the same time exploit the cheap slave labor that is available from the natives of the colonies. The colonies would also provide a dumping ground for the surplus goods produced in our factories.” _ Cecil Rhodes

  4. New European Empires • Since the fall of Rome, there has been no empire based in Europe which extended outside the continent. • 15th century • Portuguese developed ocean going skills copied by the Spanish. • 2 major discoveries • Columbus and the new world • Vasco de Gama for Portugal reaching India

  5. Portugal and Trade • Established many sea routes • 1st a route to Venice • 2nd establishing the sea route around the Cape so sailors could reach India. • Also started to take hold of Africa (Mozambique, and Zanzibar). • Island of Bombay and Sri Lanka ceded to Portugal in the 1500’s. • Wanted to trade spices and spread Christianity.

  6. Slave Trade • 1500’s Portuguese traders come to Africa. • Soon other countries wanted to come to Africa for power, gold, ivory, and slaves. • Enslaving Africans shipping them to Europe. • Triangle trade • Largest forced movement of people ever. • Wars, emptied villages, destroying culture.

  7. Europeans • Imperialism: When one country takes over another country for the purpose of obtaining natural resources. • Industrial Revolution late 19th century • Control grew with railroads and steamships • Carved up Africa • Colonies: a country or area that is ruled by another country

  8. Why scramble? • Raw materials • European nations could make its own trade policies • Barter: When you exchange a good or a service without the use of money. • Expand religion • Expand their empires • “Sun never sets on the British Empire.”

Must have prior knowledge • Look at labels/words • What questions should I ask myself? • Where is this occurring and when (past or present?) • Who is in it? (politician, president, etc) • What is the author trying to tell me?

  11. Impact • 1914 only Libya was free from European control. • Superior weapons • Different colonies had different rules. (Bits shared some power with Africans, French did not). • Still today mark Africa • Colonizers discouraged industrial development and keeping colonies dependent.
