  1. Limiting Factors and Population Size

  2. Population • All the members of a species living in a particular area.

  3. The size of one population can affect the size of another population… • …when one population increases in size, it may compete for similar resources with another population …a decrease in a particular plant’s population may reduce the population of the organism which feeds upon that plant • …an increase in the population of a predator may result in a decrease in the population of prey

  4. If the population of humans increases in a specific area, the population of white-tailed deer may decrease. (Clearing land for homes destroys resources that are part of the deer’s habitat.)

  5. If the population of red foxes (a predator) increases, the population of rabbits (their prey) may decrease.

  6. Periods of drought in Kenya are drastically reducing the populations of zebra and wildebeest, as well as livestock such as goats and cattle.

  7. Limiting Factor • An environmental factor that reduces a population’s size

  8. Food • If too many herbivores live in an area, they will wipe out the population of the plants they eat.

  9. Water • Water is essential to all living things.

  10. Living Space • Limited space may make it impossible for all members of a population to breed and make nests. • How might a decrease in living space affect a population of swallows?

  11. Weather • Temperature and amount of rainfall can limit population growth. • In 2010, a cold snap in the Amazon rainforest killed millions of fish and alligators. • http://articles.latimes.com/print/2010/feb/15/nation/la-na-fla-pythons15-2010feb15
