Kennedy’s Cold War • JFK did not like the brinkmanship tactic that Eisenhower used • Could only be used in extreme situations • Pushed for a buildup of conventional troops and weapons • Special forces- “Green Berets” • Went back to helping developing countries • Focus on Latin America • Mixed results

Kennedy’s Cold War • The Peace Corps • Sent young Americans to help other countries • Still around today • Space race • Cold War now involves space technology • JFK vows to put a man on the moon • NASA launched a massive effort to beat the Soviets • 1962- John Glenn, 1st American to orbit the Earth • 1969- First men on the moon • The us had won

Kennedy’s Cold War • Not all of Cold War was so easy • Bay of Pigs • Fidel Castro overthrew Cuban government and became Communist • Khrushchev said he would strengthen Cuba’s Military • 90 miles from Florida • Eisenhower used the CIA to train a Cuban group of exiles, La Brigada • Kennedy authorized the groups overthrow of Castro • Invasion was a disaster and did not work • US looks weak and disorganized

  5. Kennedy’s Cold War • Berlin Wall • Khrushchev wanted to keep people from fleeing East Germany and into West Berlin • Demanded that JFK take support out of Berlin • JFK refused • Khrushchev built the Wall • Armed guards would shoot anyone trying to cross

Kennedy’s Cold War • Cuban Missile Crisis • Americans revealed that the Soviets had armed Cuba with long range missiles • America blockaded Cuba • Soviets tried to get through • For 13 days America watched as the two countries negotiated • Neither wanted nuclear War • JFK wouldn’t invade Cuba and remove missiles from Turkey • Khrushchev would take missiles out of Cuba

Kennedy’s Cold War • Assassination • On Nov. 22, 1963, JFK was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas • Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime • Shot on national TV by Jack Ruby • Warren Commission determined that Oswald acted alone • Conspiracies arise • Nation mourns as their hope fades away
