  1. Intercultural Aspects and Language Work »☼« “I‘ll be waiting“ (1939) by Raymond Thornton Chandler (1888 – 1959)

  2. Structure • Introduction • First Lesson • Second Lesson • Third Lesson • Other Information • Comments • Sources

  3. Introduction Maren Wolf Jan-Michael Stube • We pick up where the last presentation left off: the students know the story and its content.

  4. Lesson 1: 0 to 15 • For this lesson, we meet at a computer room (see later in the lesson). • Discuss in class: • Setting of the story (references in the text) • “Windermere Hotel” • Old-fashioned elevators etc. • San Quentin prison • Characters (references in the text) • Tony is a detective (palming door knobs, house dick, ...)

  5. Lesson 1: 15 to 45 • Internet research: discuss appropriate topics with class and if necessary provide suggestions (e.g. Chandler). (10) • Students do the research (check progress and give support). (10) • Presentation of results. (10) • HW: find pictures that fit to your image of the setting and characters (print out and bring to class).

  6. Lesson 2: 0 to 10 • Presentation of HW: create a wallchart (be aware that the teacher should provide the material necessary for this). Windermere Hotel: Porter:

  7. Lesson 2: 10 to 20 Tony: Miss Cressy: Al: Mister Ralls: Presentation in form of a “museum”.

  8. Lesson 2 – Quiz: 20 to 30 Quiz: “Do you know...?”

  9. Lesson 2 – Quiz 2

  10. Lesson 2 – Quiz 3

  11. Lesson 2 – Quiz 4

  12. Lesson 2 – Quiz 5

  13. Lesson 2 – Quiz 6

  14. Lesson 2: 30 to 45 • Difficult words: use a monolingual dictionary to look up the definition. Write the definition on one piece of paper, the word itself on another. • Collect 10 words and then switch the definitions with your neighbour‘s. • Read out the definitions to your partner and he tries to figure out which word it describes.

  15. Lesson 2: homework Essay (~2 pages): differences to your own culture? What seems odd to you? [Hotel, criminals, guns, shooting, murder, gambling…]

  16. Lesson 3: 0 to 15 • Check homework (10) • Start lesson with crossword puzzle. (5)

  17. Lesson 3: 15 to 30 Prepare roleplay: write your own banter-scenes. You can use the persons from the story or your own similar characters. You can also change the scene and relations if you stick to the original characters.

  18. Lesson 3: 30 to 45 Roleplay: act out the scenes. Example: Tony proposes to Ms. Cressy, who mocks him but finally agrees to marry the detective.

  19. Other information „Fallen Angels“ („Perfect Crimes“) TV-Series 1993-95 By Tom Cruise Episode 1.2: „I‘ll be waiting“ By Tom Hanks Featuring Tom Hanks (Trouble-Boy #1)

  20. Comments • Maybe 4 lessons are required or leave out some tasks. • 8/9th grade: learn a lot about other perspectives (→ empathy) • Problem: text is quite difficult. • 12/13th grade: learn new words • Problem: not many new aspects about other cultures.

  21. Comments → Our problem: text does not fulfill all criteria for a suitable text. Either too difficult or not enough new information. The exploitability is taken from larger context. DISCUSSION :)
