  1. By the end of the day today, IWBAT… • Calculate momentum and explain the relationship between momentum, mass, and velocity • Do Now:An ice skater applies a horizontal force to a 20 kg block on frictionless, level ice, causing the block to accelerate uniformly at 1.4 m/s2 to the right. Determine the magnitude of the normal force acting on the block. Tuesday, December 10, 2013

  2. By the end of the day today, IWBAT… • Calculate momentum and explain the relationship between momentum, mass, and velocity Why it matters in LIFE: “Momentum” is a term you hear a lot in every day life (i.e. sports, political/social movements, etc) but now let’s make the connection to physics Why it matters in THIS CLASS: Unit #7 Content  approximately ½ of your upcoming Final Exam

  3. What it might look like on a test:

  4. Agenda + Announcements

  5. I am so proud of all my hardworking physics students! You are almost to the end of your the fall semester! 10 days!!!!!!!

  6. The Plan

  7. Proud & Courageous Eagles Honesty & Respect: Students are given all necessary tools to do well on physics exams. Our BEST Eagles prepare their own materials and complete work with their groups, rather than blindly copy someone else’s work.

  8. Proud & Courageous Eagles Self-Control: Control of one’s emotions, desires, or actions by one’s own will. Academic Integrity is an important factor in individual growth. Students that cheat reducetheir ability to learn & sabotage their growth!

  9. Unit 7: Momentum & Impulse The Unit 7 Cover Sheet goes into your journals to keep track of your completed daily work prior to the exam. Record all assignments and keep it together.

  10. Information for your CNotes Monday, 12/09/13

  11. Momentum • Momentum = Mass in motion • Any object that is moving has momentum

  12. Demo Which is harder to stop? • vs • fast Which is harder to stop? • slow Click on this link to learn more about the physics of bowling

  13. What is the equation for momentum? • Momentum depends on the mass of the object and the velocity at which its traveling • Momentum is DIRECTLY proportional to mass and velocity. (if mass , momentum , if velocity , momentum ) Momentum = mass x velocity p = m x v

  14. What are the units for momentum? p = m x v Momentum = mass x velocity kg∙m/s = kg x m/s

  15. What are the units for momentum? • Units = kgm/s

  16. Think, Pair, Share WHICH HAS MORE MOMENTUM? OR

  17. What if I tell you…. • Mass of the bullet = 0.045 kg • Velocity of bullet = 3000 m/s • Mass of elephant= 1250 kg • Velocity of elephant= 0.108 m/s

  18. And the winner is…. p = mv • pbullet = (.045 kg)(3000m/s) = 135 kg∙m/s • pelephant = (1250 kg)(.108 m/s) = 135 kg∙m/s EQUAL!!

  19. Work it Out Determine the momentum of … • 60-kg halfback moving at 9 m/s • 1000-kg car moving at 20 m/s. • 40-kg freshman moving at 2 m/s. A bicycle has a momentum of 24 kgm/s. What momentum would the bicycle have if it had … • twice the mass and was moving at the same speed? • the same mass and was moving with twice the speed? • one-half the mass and was moving with twice the speed? • three times the mass and was moving with one-half the speed? • three times the mass and was moving with twice the speed?

  20. Rube Goldberg Project Plans • Begin working on your device. You will present your functional device during class on Friday, December 13th. • Formulate a solid plan using the instructional guide and resources on the project webpage (found under the ‘Work & Energy’ tab). • You must be both creativeand logical, initiating a manageable plan to build the device using materials you can easily acquire for construction during this week. The most effective devices are constructed, tested, manipulated and retested well in advance of the due dates to ensure functionality. • Submit the first phase of design plans with your partners. Keep YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL COPIES, turn in ONE planning sheet that includes: • Group name and members • Materials you will use (a minimum of 6 segments with transitions) • Rudimentary schematics (*see example template)

  21. Exit Ticket • Upon what two things does momentum depend? • What letter represents momentum? • If mass and velocity double, what will happen to an object’s momentum?
