  4. A Very Personal Story • Between 1911 & 1920 • 5 brothers where born to Ammerintha Jane Moulton • Ammie was diagnosed with senility • 3 of her 5 boys also had dementia

  9. Death & Rebirth • Arthur (Rusty) Moulton lost his battle with Alzheimer Disease August 18,1995 • The Foundation was born from the Moulton family’s personal experience with this devastating disease

  22. The Foundation • We Rage, We Weep Alzheimer Foundation seeks also to • Make a real difference • Ensuring no caregiver feels alone, isolated or without adequate financial resources • By ‘easing the financial burden of care giving – one family at a time’

The Foundation’s Mission • The Foundation’s purpose is to supply grant funding to those caregivers who experience economic hardship in theircare-giving role • Financial assistance may be given for any necessary service or supply not currently available through statutory funding thus complimenting existing community programs

A Lifesaving Program • Project Lifesaver is a wander prevention program • Integrates law enforcement, search and rescue, people with Alzheimer Disease or related dementia and their caregivers • It includes training, technology and education  • Proven to save lives • Those conducting a search save time, money and staffing

Life-threatening Behaviour • Wandering is the most life-threatening behaviour associated with people who have Alzheimer Disease or related dementia • A caregiver’s deepest fear • 59% of persons with dementia wander • 79% of those will do so repeatedly • The survival rate of a person with cognitive impairment, in good physical condition, missing up to 24 hours is 50% • After 24 hours, they will usually be severely injured or dead

  29. A National Concern • Ottawa Citizen – • “people who wander putting unneeded burden on system, though no fault of their own. • This stress will grow exponentially as our population ages.”

  30. How Does Project Lifesaver Work? • Project Lifesaver is a public safety program • Uses electronic tracking equipment to locate citizens who wander. • Operates within 600 communities throughout North America • 8,000-10,000 active users • Since 1999 over 1500 searches have been performed • 100% success rate • Average find time less than 30 minutes

Fitting Our Mandate • To enroll in Project Lifesaver there is a one-time fee of $500 • Monthly maintenance costs for a home visit, battery and strap change is $30/month • Those in need but unable to pay may apply to the Foundation for financial assistance • Making the program accessible to all

  33. Why? Beyond the Personal • 1 in 13 Canadians over age 65 has Alzheimer Disease • 25% of caregivers experience economic hardship • 90% are ineligible for tax credits or monetary assistance • Caregivers assume 75-85% of financial responsibility • Annual cost of care giving, $10,000-$37,000 • 63,480 British Columbians have dementia • 67% (or 42,500 people) have Alzheimer Disease • 13,640 more develop the disease every year

The Home Front • Victoria, BC (home to Foundation) – • Highest proportion of very elderly – over 80 – in Canada • The age where dementia rates increase dramatically to 20% vs. 5% of those over 65 • In Canada – 4 million are over 65 and 1.3 million are over 80 • The future is frightening for those concerned with AD

  35. A Plea • The dedication in June’s book reads – “To those researchers who are looking diligently for the cause of, and cure for, this devastating disease; all of us who have ‘been there’ appreciate your efforts but – Please hurry!”

  36. Dementia’s Devastating Effect… As winter approached the last winter we spent at Rolling Meadows, the hay on which our livestock depended still lay in the field. For me, this photograph will forever symbolize the debilitating impact AD had on my husband.
