  1. Warm-up • Pair with ONE person and share your thesis/support with them. • Grade your partners thesis using the sheet you were handed on Tuesday. A, B, C, or D for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Also tell them how YOU think they might improve it (all in writing)

  2. Great Depression Section 2 • People in the cities not only lost their jobs, they lost their homes! This led to: • Shantytowns or Hoovervilles/Hoovertowns • Soup Kitchens • Breadlines

  3. Rural people (farmers) • They were also hit hard by the depression. Many lost their lands and had to become sharecroppers. • The only advantage for these people was the fact that they could grow food for themselves. If they had the land.

  4. Disaster Meets Disaster!

  5. Dust Bowl • The “ground zero” of the Dust Bowl included parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. • The effects of the Dustbowl would physically impact about 26 states. • The overall effect would be felt throughout the whole nation.

  6. Meanwhile In Detroit • The Great Depression crippled the industries of Michigan as well. Henry Ford was one of the many tycoons who resisted the idea that the economy was bad. He Actually gave raises. Then a year later decreased pay.

  7. Meanwhile in Detroit • The good news! Detroit was the “City of Champions” in 1935 the; • Red Wings won the Stanley Cup! • Lions were NFL Champs! • Tigers Won the series! • Many athletes affiliated w/ Detroit won championships (Joe Louis).

  9. And now, your Homework Create a chart that divides these topics. • Men • Women • African Americans • Latinos/Hispanics (Mexicans) • Children List AT LEAST 2 facts regarding the impact of the Great Depression

  10. Warm-up • Share your reading notes with a fellow classmate. Discuss what you thought about the different troubles each sex/race/age had to go through. • Which race/age/sex would be the best to be during the Great Depression? The worst?

  11. Art & Society • The Great Depression permeated every aspect of American society. Art was no exception.

  12. Team Jigsaw • Explain all the important terms in your section • Outline what is important from your section (try to think about cause & effect) • Create at least 3 questions from your section that you think are worthy of a high school test.
