9. Have you considered what life as a teacher might actually be like? Meeting the minimum academic requirements is an important part of becoming a teacher, but you should also learn as much as you can about the teaching lifestyle before you make your decision. Getting some experience of being in a classroom is one way of doing this. Starting salary Starting pay compares well with other graduate professions. A newly qualified teacher (NQT) will earn a minimum of £21k (£26k in inner London) but could start higher up the scale depending on previous experience. This makes teaching one of the most financially secure and rewarding career options open to you, comparing favourably with other sectors.

10. Routes into Teaching i Undergraduate options Train to be a teacher while completing a degree: Bachelor of education (BEd) courses Bachelor of arts (BA) or science (BSc) with QTS courses you will need to have A levels or Advanced Diplomas or equivalent qualifications to join a degree programme

11. The BA Route This is a more common training route in primary. The BA QTS is four years long at MMU – a combination of: Curriculum Study Professional Studies Teaching in schools and other settings Variety of options and specialisms MFL & SEN in the degree • Opportunities to study abroad via the Erasmus scheme -12 weeks study on a comparable course at a European Union University • Partnership Links with Bridgewater College, Boston and in Australia

12. Routes into Teaching ii Postgraduate option If you want to study for a degree first or already have a degree, you can train to be a teacher in 1-2 years as a postgraduate: Postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE)

13. Undergraduate > PGCE Route The most common choice for secondary education, but also very popular for Primary and for PCET (Post-compulsory Education Training for FE colleges). You would train on a degree programme in your choice of subject (take advice about what will enable you to apply for a teaching course afterwards) Then you take a one year PGCE to qualify as a teacher.

14. The 1 Year PGCE Programme The teaching programme on a PGCE is more intense than Undergraduate study! 36 weeks in duration, of which 24 weeks is in placements. Trainees graduate with 60 credits towards a Masters degree and QTS Study in: Main Subject for Secondary or PCET All KS1 and 2 curriculum areas for Primary [generalist 5 -11 or specialisms in Early Years, MFL]

15. Routes into Teaching iii Employment-based options If a school has a vacancy, and agree to offer you a training opportunity, you can train and qualify as a teacher while working in a school: Graduate teacher programme (GTP)

16. Overview of MFL as a subject in the IoE Since 2010 MFL has been an entitlement in all primary schools in England. MFL is a foundation subject and a Year 3 and Year 4 option in the BA (both sites) MFL specific courses as part of the Primary PGCE We also offer a one year full-time PGCE (Secondary) in French, German or Spanish and a one year full-time PGCE (Primary with French, German or Spanish)

Professional Studies / Teaching Studies The opportunity to explore a range of issues in mixed-subject groups that affect a teacher’s overall competence and your understanding of the role of a teacher The opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other’s curriculum practice Areas of study include assessment, classroom management, differentiation, special needs/learning, equal opportunities, citizenship, the pastoral role of the teacher

19. Application and interviews i All trainees apply through either UCAS (BA) or the GTTR (graduate routes). Applicants must meet the Grade C GCSE requirements in Maths, English and, for Primary, in science as well. Applicants must have relevant A levels or equivalent for BA routes. Applicants must have a relevant degree for a PGCE or GTP.

20. Interviews and Applications ii Interviews are allocated to people on the quality of their application form and selected because we think they have the potential to be good teachers. We look for some experience of experience / observation / voluntary work in schools, working with young people in other settings. We also look for ICT and general communication skills. Interviews comprise group discussions / presentations / individual interviews / written & spoken tasks.

21. Support In University Whilst in the University you will have: support from a personal / subject tutor, on-line support from the WebCT Partnership site and the full range of University resources – Library, ICT, Learning Support, Students Union etc..

22. Working in Partnership You will visit at least three different schools / colleges during a PGCE or BA – schools take a key role in assessing you as a trainee teacher We try to ensure you have a chance to work in different contexts You should expect to work in a range of school settings, not just those you may have been used to in your own experience.

23. Support In Schools Whilst on Placement you will work alongside: a Professional Mentor (who has an overview of all ITT in the school) who will provide professional issues support, and a Subject or Class Mentor who will guide you in your main subject or with your primary class.

24. Assessment Formal assignments that integrate practice, observation and research. Yes you do have to read books! Teaching is an academic profession. Record of Professional Development - reflective writing, self-evaluation, study tasks, audits of Subject knowledge and ICT - a ‘portfolio’ of evidence monitored through the Review Process. School Placement – judged against the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status

25. Teaching . . . a Masters Level Profession Teaching requires reflective, creative, analytical people who can make informed decisions about children’s learning The Teacher as Researcher is seen as important ‘M’ level credits form part of the primary and secondary PGCE programmes. The BA primary has a Masters level option. These units provide the platform for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) once in a teaching post.

26. Qualified Teacher Status & TDA Skills Tests The QTS Standards cover three areas: Professional Attributes Professional Knowledge Professional Skills You have to also pass Skills Tests to achieve the QTS Standards these are on-line tests in: Numeracy, Literacy, and ICT
