  3. Amendment I • Freedom of Speech • Freedom of Religion • Freedom of press • Freedom to assemble • We take these freedoms for granted but back when the country was first founded these weren’t believed to be common place. Click here to return to the main menu.

  4. Amendment II • Right to bear arms. • Right for states to keep a well regulated militia. The idea was that should the state’s freedom ever be in jeopardy the people can fight back. Click here to return to the main menu.

  5. Amendment III • Soldiers shall not be able to live in someone's house without consent of the owner of said house. • Back during the colonial era the government could force people to shelter soldiers in a time of war. Click here to return to the main menu.

  6. Amendment IV • No unreasonable searches will be conducted without the consent of the owner or probable cause. • Police can’t just go through your things without a reason. They need a warrant or probable cause. Click here to return to the main menu.

  7. Amendment V • No Double Jeopardy. • Don‘t have to be a witness against yourself. • Eminent Domain- Government can take your property for public use, but has to compensate for it.

  8. Amendment VI • Right to a speedy and fair trial. • Shall be tried in the state and district where the crime supposedly happened. • Shall be informed of accusations against the defendant. • Defendant shall be able to face accuser. Click here to return to the main menu.

Amendment VII • Right to a trial by jury in certain civil cases. • Before America gained it’s independence judges were seen as the strong arm of the British monarchy, with this amendment it was made sure that the judge was not the final decider in a citizens fate.   10. Amendment VIII • No excessive bail, and no cruel or unusual punishment. • You can’t be flogged through the streets for stealing an apple…anymore. Click here to return to the main menu.

  11. Amendment IX • The constitution couldn’t list all of the rights that are given to citizens, but those rights still exist and shall not be violated unless under specific conditions outlined by the constitution. • An example would be basic human rights, they can’t be violated but they aren’t listed in the Bill of Rights.   12. Amendment X • Any power that isn’t stated in the constitution for the Federal Government and isn’t prohibited to the States is left up to the States and the People. • A good example would be education; the constitution doesn’t mention it so it’s left up to the states to decide what standards the children must meet.
