  1. Conifers Block 3 4/6/09 Molly Owens Angela Talbert Kelsey Walker Krayton Brox

  2. Basic Information • Gymnosperms • Found all year round • One sprouted near Sphinx in Egypt • Found everywhere (China/America) except rainforests • Damp areas

  3. Different Species • Ginkgos • Female trees have thick fleshy seeds the size of plums • Cycads • Males have pollen-bearing cones and females have seed-bearing cones

  4. Gnetophytes • Three types: • Gnetums-leathery leaf vines in humid tropics • Welwitschia mirabillis-deserts of Africa • Ephedera-California deserts and arid regions

  5. Reproduction • Males form microspores that turn into pollen • Females form megaspores that develop into the gametophytes • There are pollen pinecones and there are egg pinecones • The wind blows the pollen to the egg

  6. Reproduction Female cone Sporophyte ovule Male cone Pollen sac Seed fertilization meiosis egg View inside ovule microspores Pollen tube

  7. Morphology Ginkgos

  8. Morphology Cycads

  9. Gnetum Morphology Ephedra Welwitschia mirablias

  10. Characteristics • First leaves are needles • Vascular • Seeds not enclosed

  11. Dependency • The pinecones are dependent on the gametophytes until they are knocked off and fertilized

  12. Types: Pine Trees

  13. Types: Redwoods

  14. Typical Habitat • They live in very diverse areas • Different species can live in the deserts or in the mountains

  15. Other Information • 630 living species of conifers • Most abundant, oldest and tallest plants • Most common timber and paper-pulp trees • They grow in so many regions and many have needles or leaves year round so they provide oxygen constantly • Ephedra is used in diet medications

  16. Bibliography • www.backyardnature.net/conifers.htm • www.nearctica.com/trees/conifer/index.htm • www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/collections/conifer.html • www.uah.edu/admin/Fac/grounds/WPCONF.htm • Biology Concepts and Applications
